18 arrests made during APEC protests

9/09/2007 12:45:00 PM.  | Joel Labi

Dumb and violent - that's how police on duty during APEC have been described by a father of three thrown in jail for jaywalking in front of a motorcade.

52-year-old Greg McLeay was manhandled and jailed for 22 hours after crossing Pitt Street unaware of the precession or the fact it was a secure zone.

Cameron Murphy from the Civil Liberties Council says some police actions over the summit have been completely uncalled for.

“[It’s] absolutely unnecessary for the police to arrest someone in this way.”

“What we need is a little bit of tolerance and a bit of common sense from the police, if we had that I think we’ve have had a much more successful APEC weekend,” Mr Murphy said.

Meantime, police say 18 protestors were arrested relating to yesterday’s APEC demonstrations in the city.

“What we need is a little bit of tolerance and a bit of common sense from the police, if we had that I think we’ve have had a much more successful APEC weekend,” Mr Murphy said. Cameron Murphy from the Civil Liberties Council is the problem and not the police. Giving licence to fascist thugs to attack police doing their duty, shows the problem the CLC has created. Protesters are not interested in any issue other than obeying their paymasters.

18 arrests!! Yet only two days before, the police were making statements about their fear of violent mob riots! My, those fascist thugs are sooo dangerous, aren't they!! Manhandling someone and jailing them for 22 hours for crossing the road seems a little more fascist to me. And while the police are busy focusing on this terrible threat of protester violence, the Chaser boys slip an Osama Bin Laden look-a-like past two security posts!! Need I say more?

Needing 5 cowboy police officers to lay into a 52 year old who crossed the road, they became undermanned and let his 11 year old son get away. He could also have been a huge security risk. Thankfully he didn't cause trouble.
