Kidney shoppers moving overseas

23/09/2007 10:00:00 AM.  | Edwina Bartholomew

Kidney patients are being forced to shop overseas for organs because of a four year waiting list here.

It's illegal to buy organs in Australia but countries like China and the Philippines offer a ready supply.

Anne Wilson from Kidney Health Australia says patients often risk having an operation in a third working because they're left with no other option.

“I think at the end of the day, people make decisions based on their own need and in many ways, level of desperation and exasperation as they’ve been waiting so long.”
