Lennon pledges support for retailers after Myer inferno

23/09/2007 4:30:00 PM.  |

The Tasmanian government has promised to help business owners and retail workers affected by the fire that's destroyed Hobart's historic Myer department store.

The blaze broke out yesterday afternoon and has destroyed the historic department store in central Hobart causing an estimated $50 million damage.

Nearly 24 hours later firefighters are still damping down pockets of flames.

The Tasmania Fire Service says the building including the store's 171-year-old Liverpool Street facade will have to be demolished.

With the busy Christmas period just around the corner state premier Paul Lennon says the government will do all it can to support CBD retailers affected by the disaster.

Hobart Lord Mayor Rob Valentine says the City Hall or Princes Wharf Shed No 1 in Hobart may be offered to Myer while it rebuilds.
