A rare tornado has ripped through a country town near Lismore on the far north coast causing widespread damage and prompting a major clean-up.
There is extensive damage to a small number of buildings but what the winds have hit they have all but destroyed.
A church building has been ripped apart and an electrical substation exploded in a flash as loose sheets of corrugated iron roofing fell across power lines.
The State Emergency Service has taken dozens of distress calls from residents, and says about 20 houses have been seriously damaged by the twister.
The areas hit hardest were around Dunoon, Grafton, Byron Bay and Mullumbimby.
