The Deputy Prime Minister is under fire for handing out almost a million dollars in community grants to projects in his own electorate.

Mark Vaile's accused of bypassing the screening process for the regional projects to fast track approval for the projects.

Shadow Regional Development Minister Simon Crean says it's nothing short of corrupt.

“You can’t do it that way, it’s public money. This is not national party money, not the Liberal party’s money, it’s public money.”

“Public money if it’s to be spent has to go through a proper process, this has avoided that process.”

Mr Rudd says the Government’s rorting of the scheme shows it has no credibility left on economic management.

“I say to Mr Howard, this is Tax Payers’ money, it should be invested wisely in the long-term needs of the country and the community, not in a short-term political fix just to buy political office”

Gary "Both sides do it" do you have proof of that? I have asked a valid question and you call it prissy (whatever that means) and thanks for the compliment, but perfect I am not, however I don't condone criminal behaviour, do you?

"Simon Crean worked in a number of trade unions, Storeman and Packers Union, of which he became General Secretary in 1979. At the 1990 election, Crean was elected to the seat of Hotham in the House of Representatives, and immediately entered the Hawke ministry as Minister for Science. He became Minister for Primary Industries and Energy in 1991 and Minister for Employment, Education and Training in 1993." And of course spent tax money.

Let's see if we have this right. Mr Vaile has taken my money, without my permission (or the permission of my custodian) and spent it on something which will give him some sort of gain. Isn't that a criminal offence.

I am stunned anyone can support this level of corruption in government. Its time this dishonest, racist, small minded government was put out to pasture.

Rob; don't be stunned, they all do it. Both sides. No one has the moral high ground. Let's at least agree on that?

ONE of the things that turned me off Labor a long time ago is their negativity. They forever criticise what their opposition does. Maybe it's to deflect attention from what Labor HASN'T done. No matter who is their leader they always play this same old, same old tune. And a lot of the dills out there fall for it.Vote this lot in and we'll all pay a very big price for it.

Corrupt to the core promise. But of course National Party voters will think it's ok because it benefits them. Greedy people don't worry about morals, just about themselves. Politicians like this should face stiff jail sentences.

I really hope this doesn't get swept under the rug as Liberals so often try and play it down and treat Australians for stupid, just goes to show how dishonest this Govt. is and I hope every voter realises this by election day.

Mr Howards reply to the ongoing pork barrelling is that ministers can use their own initiative. Why then haven't they done it in the last 11 years. For the people killed on underfunded roads someone should be charged.

Mr Crean, don't be so prissy! In government you would be exactly the same.
