Mystery surrounds 16 people rescued by Australian navy

21/11/2007 3:48:00 PM.  | Erin Maher
Navy personnel have rescued sixteen people from a dangerously overcrowded boat off Australia's northwest.

It was a high-risk operation in the open ocean from an unstable ten-metre boat, which has seen eight people fall into the water - including two personnel from HMAS Ararat.

Brigadier Andrew Nikolic says it is not yet known where the people came from - or where they were heading.

“We’re not going to speculate on that. Our focus was on ensuring the safety of those onboard – something our people did most effectively.

“Clearly there will be an effort now to establish the identity and the status of these people and what they were intending to do. That will be done by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.”

Where is the Labor policy on the subject of illegal immigration?

I think it's pretty much the same as the Liberal policy, except they think that the 800 bed Christmas Island facility is enough for the amount of offshore processing we do, and the others are a waste of taxpayer money.

Bob The Labour policy is buried under working family slogans, platitudes and Motherhood statments., I recall KRudd saying they would close the off shore processing installations, allow the boats to come to Chismas Island. you can guess the rest. The working families will not be able to get legal aid as it will all be spent on high court challenges to deportations. There is 15 million registered refugees in UN camps round the world that can't comes in by the back door.
