HIV infections are on the rise in Australia.
According to statistics from the Department of Health and Ageing, new HIV cases have increased by 31 per cent over six years.
While testing for the highly infectious disease remains high among homosexual men, Professor Basil Donovan from the Centre in HIV and Epidemiology says the wider community can also be at risk.
“We’re a victim of our own success.”
“By containing it to the first population, for the most part, which is gay men, anyone who’s not a gay man, automatically thinks they’re immediately safe,” he said
“That’s not true – it’s focused among gay men – it’s not confined to gay men.”
