NRMA furious at dangerous Bridge protest

The NRMA has attacked a protest group, for causing major disruption on Friday night to peak hour traffic on Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Hundreds of cyclists, part of the Critical Mass group, held a meeting in Hyde Park before moving onto the bridge, slowing Northbound traffic to a crawl, as they stopped while crossing on their way to North Sydney.

Ken Boyce from the RTA says police will be on hand to keep watch, but motorists going through the area should try find another route home.

“We just have to ask everyone to be a bit patient.”

NRMA spokesman Peter Couree says it isn't the first time this sort of protest has happened and something has to be done.

“I think it’s absolutely appalling that thousands of motorists will be stuck in traffic on a Friday night because of the actions of a few.”

”It’s unsafe, it’s unfair for the motorists who are trying to get home, it’s unfair for their families who are waiting for them to get home,” he said.

“This sort of behavior needs to stop.”

Police minister David Campbell has told 2GB’s Luke Bona there's nothing authorities can do to stop the protesters.

“We have to get the balance between an ability for people to make their point and protest, and try to ensure that that creates as least disruption as possible.”

“That’s the challenge, difficulty and the frustration that police and government have in a situation like this,” he said.

It's simple "Police Minister", just get the NSW Police to enforce the law as it is illegal to ride on the main deck of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. As per usual, the police take the soft option and allow a minotiry to control the majority. If they want to protest, let them do it on Sunday. But it is not really about protesting, it is all about causing maximum disruption and demonstrating the impotence of the NSW Government and NSW Police.

This lot are good at telling us what they CAN'T do. Start telling us what you CAN do. You can refuse permission to let these ferals take over this City and hold it to ransom. On a Friday or any other day. And if you can't Mr. Campbell, I suggest you go find yourself another job, one that doesn't entail buggering up peak hour traffic. And IF there is another critical mass rally, we put ALL the state pollies in THEIR cars and sit them right in the middle of the mess to let them see how it feels.

Perhaps the angry motorists and especially NRMA spokesman Peter Couree need to take a good hard look at themselves and ask- what are you doing about global warming? If every able-bodied commuter, who lives within 20kms of their workplace, were to ride (or walk) to work we could make an IMMEDIATE 10–15 per cent reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions. So get real. The first wave of the climate change catastrophe is already unstoppable. We must act to reduce further impacts. Get on your bikes!

Great idea. Let's ban protests because it inconveniences people. :-) A protest is effective if people notice. Looks like you did. Next step is to see how you can reduce your car usage. Next step is to ask the NSW government for better public transportation, for proper bike lanes. Things won't improve until we all demand it. It is not you vs us. It is about providing options other than cars at a time when global warming has become a reality!
