The NRMA has attacked a protest group, for causing major disruption on Friday night to peak hour traffic on Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Hundreds of cyclists, part of the Critical Mass group, held a meeting in Hyde Park before moving onto the bridge, slowing Northbound traffic to a crawl, as they stopped while crossing on their way to North Sydney.
Ken Boyce from the RTA says police will be on hand to keep watch, but motorists going through the area should try find another route home.
“We just have to ask everyone to be a bit patient.”
NRMA spokesman Peter Couree says it isn't the first time this sort of protest has happened and something has to be done.
“I think it’s absolutely appalling that thousands of motorists will be stuck in traffic on a Friday night because of the actions of a few.”
”It’s unsafe, it’s unfair for the motorists who are trying to get home, it’s unfair for their families who are waiting for them to get home,” he said.
“This sort of behavior needs to stop.”
Police minister David Campbell has told 2GB’s Luke Bona there's nothing authorities can do to stop the protesters.
“We have to get the balance between an ability for people to make their point and protest, and try to ensure that that creates as least disruption as possible.”
“That’s the challenge, difficulty and the frustration that police and government have in a situation like this,” he said.
