Great Barrier Reef’s grim fate

14/12/2007 8:30:00 AM.  | Amie Meehan
Scientists claim it is probably too late to save the Great Barrier Reef from global warming, even if governments agree to far reaching measures to slash greenhouse gas emissions.

Delegates at the UN climate change conference in Bali are under pressure to reach a new agreement to reduce emissions.

But experts say for coral reefs, the time for action could have already passed.

I read Stavros Dimos ( EU Env. Comm) in Bali says if Australia fails to back the 25% - 40% cuts ..."the Kyoto signing, which EU applauded, will not have the substance expected from Australia". Its getting tough Kevin. They won't accept rhetoric!

Another glorious tribute to John Howards policy of encouraging Global Warming and Climate change. I hope they remember to put a a plaque somewhere near Cairns to honour his efforts in killing the Great Barrier Reef, once the dam thing is dead there will be nothing to stop his mates drilling for oil there. I hope the tourist industry has a Plan B.

HOPE they have got Photos and Samples so that Future generations know that the Great Barrier REEF did actually exist. The Future generation will be saying to their teacher "why didn't they SAVE it" BECAUSE it would have Cost them too much Money and nobody could agree to act says the Teacher.

Guys, being sacarstic is not going to save the reef, either! Don't forget you are also contributors, too! And Graeme, I just hope next time your cat died you won't be blaming JH for it! Sounds like you can blame EVERYTHING on Howard, and EVERYTHING is connected to him! Come on, he is NOT God, ok? If not for the good time Australis have economically how can you afford to have a PC and utter these crap?

Gazza, agreed that climate change is a tough issue - unfortunately personally I am quite pessimistic about coming up with a solution, though. It will be hard to image that any countries would be willing to cut back emission at the expense of economic growth. Of course, unless there is some technological breakthrough which makes alternative energy sources at least equally economical as coal. I can't see that happening in the near future though.

WO: I agree and it won't happen until all the OIL,Gas and Coal has been used up.Then we will see what they come up with.

it's called global warming and no it's not a difficult issue but it is for the people who rule the countries. it shouldn't have happened in the first place but seeing as some people are just so stupid and think that the environment is going to fix it's self well yer it might be a difficult issue for them to tackle . Anyways ofcourse it's too late to save the great barrier reef and i guarantee you that in twenty years there will be no change to global warming trust me !!!
