Retailers happy with record Chrismas sales

25/12/2007 8:32:00 AM.  | Robert Spicer

Despite rising petrol prices, higher inflation and threats of increased interest rates, consumer spending has been up this Christmas.

Most major retail stores have reported near record spending, with thousands of people rushing in for last minute buying.

Paul Zara from David Jones says it's been a bumper Christmas.

“The weekend before Christmas is always our busiest.”

“We expected to serve a million people between 9am when we open on Saturday and on Christmas eve at 6pm when we close.”

“We certainly achieved those sort of numbers.”

He says retailers have been surprised recent negative economic reports have had little impact.

“We haven’t seen that at all.”

“In fact our shoppers have had a good time shopping,” he said.

Pre-election Swan said middle Australia was hurting, mortgage stress etc etc? Well, read the news...we've just had one of the biggest Christmas spending sprees in history. You see that's where Labor were clever...we believed all the pre-election crap that they kept repeating, but in reality, none of it - ABSOLUTELY NONE OF IT, was true. Keep watching, and make sure tat you remember when next we are asked to vote.

And Swan will tell us to brace the high interest rate when RBA raises the rate in Feb due to pressure by consumber spending. Labor will then argue that it is the legacy of Howard government, and its supporter will once again join in unison to say that Howard is evil, only benefited the rich and exploited the poor, etc, etc. See, people spend beyond their means to crank up credit card debts only to blame others when interest rate goes up due to high inflation.

As we've said before WO, Labor does not understand the economy. But they did understand how to get into government. Problem is, what are they going to do now that they haven't got Costello to copy? Seriously, it should be a concern to everybody.

People WONT REMEMBER next election, they will be too busy being hit with Labor/Union/Greens/Kyoto slogans, everybody will be oooooed and aaaaared and think K Rudd is going to save us from the boogie man. One thing with Labor to their credit is they have fantastic marketing techniques; they basically did the equivalent to selling snow to Eskimos. Oh well, Kyoto is looking more as a farce, Work choices is looking as not as bad, so basically we voted for someone who appeared different, how sad.

Bart. Have you noticed how the left wing loonies (Henderon and the likes) don't comment on this news..because it doesn't fit their "picture" of a country struggling under extremes of poverty. Sure people are hurting, but a great deal are not. Mortgage stress does exist, but much of it is self imposed?

Bart. Add to that...poverty struck Australians expected to spend a record $6 billion on the Boxing Day sales! How will the Labor spin doctors turn that into a problem that Howard created. People do not realise that Costello's reading and management of the economy was (and always will be) light years ahead of anything Swan could think up?

Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, and Tweedle Dumber, i.e.,Bolton, WO, and Bart. You facists really are sore losers, but you will get used to it. Howard's record of lying, and the Lib/Nat COALition's history of accepting the lies, means that the COALition has lost it's credibility for many years, you need to change the staff, Andrews, Costello, Abbott etc still stink of the Howard era and that smell will linger well beyond the next election. Blaming Labor for the current economic situation is desperate.

Bart. Henderson is back with another meaningless comment! Hendo ....this affluence doesn't fit your "picture" of a country struggling under extremes of poverty? How can you explain that everything was so bad under the previous government if we are all spending "billions" on the sales. You make absolutely no sense. You are irrelevent. A waste of space! We've all moved on, and are planning how things will improve from 2010 onwards, when you and your mates will become even less relevant!

Bolts - I really think Hendo has some form of psychological disorder! Seriously Graeme, I have made this offer many times - I am willing to support you with the medicare levy I paid to get you to see some psychiatric counselling - it will benefit you as well as the rest of the human race!

Henderson. Do you and you mate Swan understand that demand driven inflation is a sign of economic prosperity?

So Australia's private foriegn debt increses as fools are conned by the credit companies into living beyond their means. This leads to increased interest rates and the debt spiral started by Costello dwarfs the so called 10 billion Dollar Black Hole Howard and Costello blamed everything on. Privatizing National Debt doesn't get rid of it, it's just fudging the books. Aussies are going to encounter some tough times and no Government can stop this rot quickly, but Costello started it, remember.

Henderson. Now I understand! You are saying, all Australians (except you) are fools? OK I can accept that - I mean we voted your mates into government, and nobody with any sense would do such a stupid thing! Anyway, one thing you will not be able to blame on the previous government is the inevitable increase in unemployment. Don't forget...we're watching!

Graeme, as Bolts has rightly said - demand driven inflation is a by produt of a good economy. Look at US - inflation and interest are are low but their economy is at the verge or recession! Also who's fault is it if people spend beyond their mean, huh? Costello gave us the prosperity but he cannot fool proof people's behaviour! If you spend heaps it's your responsibility to ensure you can pay back! Just basic common sense which I understand you don't possess.

There are foolish Aussies. 1. Those who run up credit card bills. 2. All those who believed Children were thrown overboard. 3. All those who believed there were Weapons of Mass Destruction. 4. All those who believed Howard wouldn't bring in a GST. 5. All those who thought Howard could win again. 6. All those who think inflation is a good sign. 7 All those who think Nelson left Labor. And you Bolts, you're a fool, and Bart and the annonymous WO, too ashamed to put his name to his dribble.

Graeme, I am not the only one not using my real name! If you want to get personal here - how do I know that Graeme Henderson is your real name - you could be using false name here, too! So go figure and seek some psychiatric help!

Geez WO, Talk about cowardice, now you are hiding behind your Paranoia? You have no intellectually viable argument so you try lies, are you a Lib Politician? you have the qualities to lead the Libs, Facist outlook. Superiority Complex. Greed. Cowardice. Paranoia ( there are weapons of kids mass destruction overboard under your bed.) Oh yeah, innate dishonesty and an inability to empathise with the less fortunate. Now all you need is to be a Labor Party member and you can lead the Libs.
