A newborn baby girl has been mauled to death by a rottweiler in Melbourne's southeast.

The baby girl, aged between four and nine weeks, was savaged in her cot by the family dog in Pakenham at about 1pm (AEDT), police told News Limited publications.

Paramedics attempted to revive the baby, who was attacked about the head, but their efforts were in vain.

A neighbour told LIVENEWS.com.au that the dog seemed "vicious" and made her fearsome.

This is another tragic dog attack on a defenceless baby. The parents must be distraught! Unfortunately, dogs can see babies as intruders into the family unit/pack, and they are defending their territory. Some dogs, due to their size and temperaments, are not suitable to be around small children. Even dogs not usually "aggressive" can attack out of jeolosy. Dog breeding needs to be controlled. Any random person can breed puppies in their back yards and sell to the public.

These dogs should be banned! parents should know a lot better-where was the dog inside? get real no one should be having animals in the house and around small children-dogs like this find something new (such as a baby) a threat and can sense the baby can't defend themselves so they attack. Surely, parents these days can't be that stupid - it only brings tragedy and dismay and "if only", if only is just too late!-children need to be protected not left alone anytime and especially with any animal!

Of corse this is a tradgic incident, and could happen with any breed of dog when there is a new baby in the house! My family and i have breed rottweilers for more than ten years and have never had a aggressive dog yet! if any thing they are the protecters of the family and the biggest sooks going! Although they do need dicipline and to be socialised because they are a big dog, don't blame the breed, it could happen to any breed. I wouldn't own any other breed!

I've been brought up with animals all my life, sheep, cows, pigs, horses, dogs of all breeds however mongrels, but do not defend any animal they can and will turn on anyone-especially the defenceless, this means children and the aged. This is a tragic accident however you need to understand that animals and defenceless humans do not mix-they sense it and unless you can defend yourself against them you will have these tragic accidents no matter what sooks you think they are-you cannot trust them!

I agree with Dan. Dogs such as these have no place in suburban Sydney. They are too large for most backyards for one thing. Cindy, It is all well and good to say that you have never had an aggressive dog, yet I am pretty sure that my Jack Russell terrier could not maul a child to death. She may give him/her a nasty bite though. The fact remains, large dogs and small kids do NOT mix.

we have german shepherds and rottys with bringing up 4 healthy children, not once have our dogs shown any aggression towards them . Only love, protection and guardinship have the dogs shown. Any breed great or small has a potential for jealously, just like humans , unfortunately both humans and dogs seem to react badly. Its a pity we cant put down humans like we do dogs

Rotweillers are not necessarily an aggressive breed. Many smaller dogs are probably more agressive and protective, but the problem is that they are powerful dogs with muscles. Any attack therefore is more formidable. Puppies are too readily available, despite the pet over-population, and people can buy them when they are saleable and "cute" without knowing their final size and temperament. Larger dogs need more responsible owners!

Anyone with any common sense should always put a child before any animal and I would be very surprised if people thought otherwise-however, to be honest some people just don't think that way-surely as parents you have a responsibility. All dogs have the potential as it is natural instinct for them to be on guard - if they see a baby wriggling the dog will sense it being defenceless-if you have any animal DON'T LEAVE CHILDREN OR SOMEONE DEFENCELESS ALONE WITH THEM!A LESSON LEARNT OFTEN TOO LATE!

How many times have we seen 'tragic accidents' between dogs and babies. I have nothing against dogs however I do want to make the point that parents need to learn from history that dogs and lilltle babies do not go together. Maybe the governments can help here by somehow making it illegal for families with young babies to own dogs. this might be easier said than done, but clearly there is a need for some people to be prortected from themselves.

I highly disagree with George! He say's small children & large dogs don't mix, all we ever owned was large dog's and was never bitten because the dogs were taught from go, I will never own a little dog because I have been bitten a few times by several little dogs just by running out and attacking, even my nan's little dogs being brought up with little kids still bite! It's in every breed of dog to bite..........it's just how they are brought up!!!

Does common sense not prevail?? I really feel for these parents losing their little baby, but come on! Any Tom, Dick or Harry should know that if you have a baby and if you have an pet (whether it be a dog or a cat), you DON'T have them in the house together!!! You certainly don't leave the nursery door open for them to get in! That is just pure common sense!! They obviously didn't have this and their poor little baby died in the most horrific way because of it.

WHERE WERE THE PARENTS?? THIS IS A PERFECT CASE OF PARENTS NOT BEING RESPONSIBLE. NO BAD DOGS - JUST BAD OWNERS AND NEGLIGENT PARENTS.
