Calls to ban abusive parents from sporting sidelines

13/01/2008 7:40:00 AM.  | Joel Labi

Abusive sporting parents could soon be legally banned from the sidelines under a radical proposal by a junior football club.

Officials in the Penrith district rugby league area are demanding at statewide AVO system to protect its junior players.

The Telegraph reports some as young as 14 are being verbally and physically attacked by furious parents after games.

I wonder if booze and cigarettes has anything to do with the parents behavior, you only have to look at any sports field after a match and see the rubbish thats left behind, cigarette packets, tinnies and we call that a good example for our young. Bar the parents because they do not set a very good way forward for the children of today. But what does one expect from places like Penrith and surrounding districts; when we played sport it was a day out for all and we had fun mums dads and the kids.

You ruin a perfectly valid point by slamming people that live in the Penrith area. There are many good, hard working educated people there. And bad parental behaviour comes from all socio, economic backgrounds, they just may not all be as public about it. Why isn't alcohol BANNED at all sporting events (esp kids ones)? Screaming abusive parents should be banned - its disgraceful.

Unfortunately times have changed and you get the minority of mums and dads behaving like spoilt brats,it doesn't only happen in Penrith, does it actually say there was boozing going on or did it say they could ban abusive parents in the future. The soft approach of govt's are to blame, there is no respect for the law or anyone else. Some parents expect a lot from their kids and that is already deemed impossible if their child has no interest in sports but are pushed instead of enjoying the game.

Alcohol may play a part in some cases, but the fact that a lot of parents may not be under the influence is just as concerning. What is the point in playing or watching sport if you can't have fun with it? I've seen parents get angry at their own children and at other children for "not winning" or "doing the wrong thing" in sports and it's stupid. And this is not localised to Penrith by any means, there are parents like that everywhere.
