EXCLUSIVE: Labor backflip on Brethren

14/01/2008 12:57:00 PM.  | Yoni Bashan
The shadowy Exclusive Brethren religious sect has been guaranteed another $10 million in taxpayer funding for its school campuses, despite being branded an “extremist cult” which “breaks up families” by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd before the election.

In a stunning turnaround which could spark a rift inside Government ranks, Labor will continue bankrolling dozens of Brethren schools, even though it launched several blistering attacks on the group and demanded a review of its campus funding arrangements while in opposition.

According to budget estimate figures obtained by Livenews.com.au, more than $35 million dollars has been set aside for the sect’s 31 schools since 2005.

In New South Wales there are 17 campuses, organised under the centralised Meadowbank Education Trust (MET), which received more than $4 million last year.

The figure is expected to rise by $300,000 under Labor while, nationally, Brethren schools will receive an estimated $10,106,948 in 2008.

The PM has been backed into a corner over the issue after vowing to maintain funding levels for all non-government schools in a bid to win office.

However, Kevin Rudd has raised serious concerns about the Exclusive Brethren in the past and slammed their teaching ideologies as counter-productive for students.
"I have real reservations having federal taxpayers' money going into those sorts of schools," Mr Rudd said in 2006.

"Based on my advice, [they] actively discourage children from using information technology [and] from learning how to use computers properly because they will provide avenues of contact with the outside world.”

The decision is also likely to anger Left faction leader Anthony Albanese who’s known for his bitter campaigns against the conservative sect.

Brethren students are discouraged from using computers and the Internet to minimise their contact with the outside world.

Critics say the funding decision flies in the face of Labor’s “Education Revolution”, which is centred around modern technology like computers.

Brethren officials say the technology is an integral part of their teaching agenda.

But Greens senator Christine Milne says it’s just a ploy to receive more taxpayer-funded handouts, which are only provided if schools meet strict curriculum guidelines. election.

Back flip so early ay? Can someone rack up a list on how many back flips and broken promises there have been so far? I don’t have that much time. I wonder if there will be a mention on how apparently unfair the GST distribution is?

Bart, I agree - a Labor "backflip/dishonesty" count might be an informative addition to LIveNews. Maybe Tim B can do the data collection?

Stop all money to private schools and send all children to public schools. Then watch the meltdown.

It was normal for Kevin to distance himself from anything that he thought would have a negative effect on his election campaign. He embraced anything that he thought would help the cause-he even aligned himself with a lot of the Coalitions fiscal and economic policies. It appears, with the help of the greens, they managed to trick enough people to gain power. Best wishes to all the innocent people who thought they would get relief from interest rates, petrol & supermarket prices and inflation

What about Muslim schools, namely the one proposed for Camden that the Labor government is so supportive of? They're closed to outsiders, disallow women in worship and encourage oppression of women and non-muslims. I guess the Labor government sees the oppression of women as less important than a little technophoiba. Where's your "misgivings" on this more volatile issue Mr Flip-flop Rudd?

Has Rudd commented on this decision publicly yet? I just wonder what his motivation is here...

Any schools that practice extremism should never be allowed to become part of this society, they need to go back to their own country and do it there. I am sick of do gooders supporting this behaviour.Keep this place free of radical views. We should be able to live life to the fullest without fear or favour, which too often this doesn't appear to be the case. We have our own schools who accept everyone, these schools and yes like the one proposed at Camden is designed for the likes of oppression.

Excellant - well this particular movement started in ireland, although the current world leader is a born and bred Aussie. But you're right, lets get rid of all the Irish, and their disgusting christian values, evil the lot of them. How dare they bring their bible rubbish to our country. How dare they not move with the times, oh the disgrace of forcing their children to live by strict bible rules. I wonder how many people will be left in Oz once we kick out everyone with Irish blood in them?

I believe Mr Rudd is just about to show us what a great big "lily liver" he really is. Fancy funding an education system as dysfunctional as that perpetrated by the Brethren after beating up the so-called "Education Revolution' Labor is soft on hard decisions but then, nothings changed.

There has been much untruth circulated about Brethern, why persecute christian folk who desire to bring up their children under biblical teaching,if there is funding for Schools they are entitled to their share from Government. The Brethern are not the monsters the press and general public make them out to be.

Unfortunately the education system in this country is literally bankrupt. Yes, we have to rely on the private school system, otherwise (if all subsidies were removed) then the public system would grind to a halt. I for one do NOT approve of my taxes being spent to support ANY private schools. At least I can have some say in how my local school is run via the P&C, forget it for the "Brethren", the Muslim schools, and all the other religious nuts. However we have little choice it seems.

Agreed we do need the private system - the public system couldn't cope. Re your comment on the P&C, all schools have that type of committee, although in my experience they are all as bad as each other. I DON'T send my kids to private schools becasue i believe in the public system. But i do think each child is entitled to have their education subsidised, and then its up to parents to decide whether they want to top that up on specialist education as long as the schools are monitored by theEd Dept

.Kevin Rudd has had the wool pulled over his eyes just like John Howard did. Hope there won't be any secret meetings and slaps on the back. I really though Mr Rudd could see through the cult. Where is the funding for the state schools and state high schools. They need funding badly. Some don't even have computers. Very disappointed indeed that the Laborites have done a backflip, and there are people who are homelss!!

I hear what you’re saying Lyn but I believe what you mention is state responsibilities, I mean if the feds are going to dump money to cover the butts of the states then why have state gov at all? This was the major prob when John Howard was in, he got the blame for just about everything, which is just not fair when we have elected state gov who slack off and blame John Howard.

Rudd has not back flipped? He promised to keep Current (LIBERAL) funding to non Government schools during Election. He is a man of his Word even though he Loathes the Brethren!

Bang on Hendo the 2nd, Rudd is caught between promises here. Let us hope he can find a way to extract himself. He could start by removing the E B's classification as a Church and he could deal with the Scientologists at the same time. Then simply outlawing religion in schools, then increase taxes on private school fees and pour that money into public schools. The rich can pay for everyone.
