A matter of life and undeath

16/01/2008 2:00:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton
A Cambodian man has shocked his family by turning up alive and well to his own funeral.

The family held a funeral for Oum Souv, 24, after he disappeared for two days and two nights.

The family found an unclaimed decomposing body when searching the nearby jungle, which they assumed was the young husband and father.

Souv had actually been drugged, robbed and left for dead outside a neighbouring village.

He came to and managed to find his way home just in time to see his grieving family cremating the wrong man.

In a similar incident, a Polish sailor has returned from to a two week fishing trip to find that he was dead. At least in the legal sense.

The 37 year-old Piotr Kucy was declared dead after local authorities wrongly identified a body that had floated ashore.

However, despite his reappearance Kucy has failed to convince bureaucrats he is still alive.

Five months after his return the sailor is still unable to work, drive or go to the bank because he is still legally dead.
