Confirmed: Stewie Griffin is gay

4/02/2008 1:19:00 PM.  | Tim Brunero
Cartoon baby Stewie Griffin, from the animated comedy series Family Guy has been outed by the show’s creator Seth MacFarlane as gay.

In an interview with gay magazine, The Advocate, MacFarlane said the show’s writers have kept the character’s sexuality ambiguous because they could get jokes ‘from both sides’.

While the show’s writers believe Stewie is "almost certainly gay", he thinks the character himself is "in the process of figuring it out for himself".

The acclaimed show often features gay sub-plots exploring gay marriage, adoption rights and AIDS. MacFarlane’s other successful creation, American Dad features and alien character who, like Stewie, is also famous for his effete mannerisms.

Family Guy airs at 9pm Thursdays on Seven.
