NSW Treasurer Michael Costa has indicated he will not hang around if the plan to sell the state's electricity assets is blocked.
Mr Costa also claimed Labor's state president, Bernie Riordan, had forfeited his right to the job with his outburst this week against the privatisation.
"I certainly will not hang around in politics if we're not doing reform ... (but) this will go ahead," Mr Costa told Fairfax newspapers.
Mr Riordan, who is also secretary of the Electrical Trade Unions, called for the treasurer to quit, prompting Mr Costa to make a reciprocating request.
"I'm calling on Bernie to stand down as president of the party because it's been traditionally the role of the president to try to mediate where problems have arisen between the government and the party...," Mr Costa said.
He also said Mr Riordan had already told him he supported the sale of the $4-billion retail arm of the electricity industry.
"I've had discussions with Bernie where in the past he's told us to sell retail," Mr Costa said.
Mr Riordan told Fairfax he was making "no further comment".
