Off-beat Kiwi comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, who are famous for their hit HBO television show have won New Zealand’s first Grammy in 24 years.

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, star in the cult comedy series, which follows the lives of two mates struggling to make it as folk singers in New York.

The pair’s EP The Distant Future, picked up a Grammy for best comedy album thanks to hit songs heard on the show such as Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros and Foux du Fafa.

Their unusual comic styling and international success also saw them being named Wellingtonians of the Year in 2007 for their contribution to the arts scene.

The last New Zealander to win a Grammy was opera star Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in 1984.
