SA schoolboy explodes fish-memory myth

18/02/2008 10:44:00 AM.  |
A 15-year-old South Australian school student has busted the myth that goldfish have a three second memory.

Rory Stokes, from the Australian Science and Mathematics School in Adelaide, conducted an experiment to test the commonly held theory that goldfish have short memory spans.

Rory's experiment involved teaching a small group of fish to swim to a beacon by establishing a memory connection between the beacon and food.

He was also keen to open people's minds to the cruelty of keeping fish in small tanks.

Rory's experiment involved teaching a small group of fish to swim to a beacon by establishing a memory connection between the beacon and food.

Over a period of three weeks, he placed a beacon in the water at feeding time each day, waited 30 seconds and then sprinkled fish food around the beacon.

The time taken for the fish to swim to the beacon reduced dramatically, from more than one minute for the first few feeds to less than five seconds by the end of the three weeks.

Following the initial three-week period, Rory removed the beacon from the feeding process.

Six days later, he once again placed the beacon in the water and despite not seeing it for almost a week, the fish swam to the beacon in 4.4 seconds, showing they had remembered the association between food and the beacon for at least six days.

"My results strongly showed that goldfish can retain knowledge for at least six days," Rory said.

"They can retain that knowledge indefinitely if they use it regularly."

Rory also conducted a number of sub-experiments which showed that goldfish were capable of negotiating a simple maze, having them move onto a second beacon if they found no food at the previous one.

"My experiments showed that goldfish have the mental capabilities to learn and remember fairly complex concepts and they can retain that knowledge for at least a number of days," he said.

Australian Science and Mathematics School principal Jim Davies said the series of experiments were an excellent example of science investigation made fun.

Is this new news because it was proven in 2003 by scientists at the University of Plymouth in England that goldfish have memory spans up to 3 months. Have a read here http://nootropics.com/intelligence/smartfish.html

Now someone needs to bust the myth about whether or not lobsters feel pain when they are boiled.

So he watched mythbusters?

actually most people just get memory confused with attention span. This kid didn't prove anything, the memory part is just an "urban legend" or misunderstanding of the masses.

Gee, give the kid a break; he's 15!

it's already been done. It's called the Mythbusters. Ironically, that was the episode that was airing earlier today on the Discovery channel. What are the odds, huh? I agree with Jon Rojester on this one.

Yeah, well, I can beat the U of Plymouth scientists by at least 14 years. 'Cause when I was a kid I taught my goldfish to swim to the top for food whenever I rang a bell over the tank. ;) Cool experiment for the kid though!

I find it very sad that adults are pointing out the issues with a 15 year-old's science experiment. Because, you know, when we were kids we were the first ones to put a tooth in cola or build a volcano. Get a grip, people. The kid may not have made any great discoveries in the realm of science, but it was a damn good project and he did very well. Pay attention to the topic at hand and stop trying to exert your bravado for highlighting the fact that it has already been done.

Yes, this is good. anyone who has had fish has noticed that right before feeding, the fish will recognize certain sounds, or actions, calling them to the surface. When I open the lid to my large fish tank, the lid hits a light case and makes a knocking sound. Then I put the food in, shortly after, the fish swim up to the surface when hearing the knocking sound. Pavlov anyone? fish are smart, and I'd say they may have a short memory for things that don't reoccur.

Mythbusters did this first. Haven't you seen the show? They did it when, in like 2007! And the boy did it when, ah but in 2008! So, therefore, Mythbusters busted it first. You should go online at discoverychannel.com and look at the Mythbusters page to see that I am right. They did this first. The boy didn't. He probabaly saw it somewhere or heard about it and thought that if he did it that he would be famous. NOT in my mind! So lets leave this child alone and praise the Mythbusters!!!! Ha ha!

Who cares if it was on myth busters, seriously the kid is 15 years old and he did a great experiment. How many other 15 years old would think of it? I applaud him. Shame on you for trying to bring him down. How old are you?!

OK... All you wankers blathering off about Mythbusters. Those are forty year old men. This is a 15 year old teen. It's a fine experiment he did, and it outweighed anything I might have done when I was that age. Coming into this mess of a comment box I didn't know Mythbusters had done anything in this field so I thought it was cool. Not to mention that statement alone proves something. THAT NOT EVERYONE IN WESTERN EUROPE AND HER SURROUNDING ISLANDS WATCHES MYTHBUSTERS. Show some respect will ya?

Mythbusters, Mythbusters, Mythbusters! All the kid had to do was watch television to come up with this idea! lol Why should he receive credit for doing something that has already been proven by other people? Just because he's a kid?! No

I think that it is pretty disgusting that some of you feel the need to rip apart a 15 year school boys project. Its people like yourselves that produce the lazy layabout's that feed off our society's today because your mentality is that of its been done before so why bother? If it was my child i'd be proud of his accomplishments, we should be encouraging our children not leading them to a life of no hope.

That's awesome! Goldfish memory retention is something that has never cross my mind and it's nice to know their memory threshold. Why the hell didn't I do an experiment like that when I was 15?

I think it was a cool project and applaud the kid for doing a good job. Just because it was done on mythbusters doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't his own idea. Give the kid a break and keep in mind that mythbusters is one of my favourite shows I still think that it's been done there is irrelevant.

I applaud this young man for going to such lengths to prove his theory. He'll make a fine scientist some day. I wonder if he's learned in school about Pavlov and his dog? I think he'd find it interesting. By the way, who cares if it was on mythbusters? How many millions of young children have used the same "volcano" demonstration at science fairs? Do you condemn them for not having an original idea, I wonder?

Hey, it doesnt matter where he got it from. it matters that he actually proved it. im 14 and im doing it for my science project with Goldfish. and other fish. i think that he is really smart to be able to pull it off. and i hope i can do the same.

whaat is wrong with u people, what have any of you proved to be knocking this great kid? At least he is not sitting around watching Mythbusters!!!!! He is 15, trying to become something, doing something in his life!!!! Who knows, maybe the goldfish are different in Australia, and he did prove it?!?! I think he's a great kid, and if he were mine, whether he came up with the idea or not, I'd be proud of him! You people need to relax, push him forward! He is our future, we need kids like him!!!!!!

I agree with Heather. You shouldn't be criticizing the poor kid. He did a great experiment and for the people who don't watch Myhtbusters, this would be an amazing thing. This would be the first time that people who don't watch Mythbusters would hear about it. And anybody who tries to contradict me is stupid and lazy so I only want to hear good things about him here. Bravo kid. Bravo.

I remember when I was that age I proved that seamonkeys liked beer. I also tried to solve fermat's theorem, but I never succeeded at that. I did manage to build a great little circuit that I've been trying to recreate that interferes with every frequency we use, including cellphones.... I also solved a Rubiks cube using mathematics only. I wish I had that proof still too. -D
