Centrelink to lose 2,000 staff

22/02/2008 7:09:00 PM.  | Robert Spicer
Up to 2,000 Centrelink staff are set to lose their jobs, part of the new federal governments cost cutting measures.

The move is expected to form part of Labor's $14 billion in spending cuts in the May budget, an attempt to relieve pressure on inflation and interest rates.

The National Secretary of the CPSU, Steven Jones, says the cuts will not only hit staff, they will hurt the most vulnerable sections of the community.

“It’s terrible news for the workers, it’s also not much joy for the clients of Centrelink.”

If they get rid of all these staff; how the hell are they going to look after all the extra welfarers Labor seem to encourage?

James H.Your DemiGod Howard has Gone and your beloved Libs are in a complete mess, worse than the inflation debacle they left behind.Their sole purpose now is to disrupt Parliament with their CRY baby behavior.Long may they stay in opposition.

To you the same as the real Paul Keating; if you are unable to contribute any morcel of sense; just shut up! No matter what mess the LIberal Party are in now, they will never be in as bad a condition as the ALP or the country after the ALP has finished with it.

Well said James and you are right nothing could ever be as bad as the ALP, look at the disaster in NSW under Iemma, his Ministers involved in corruption, it's so typical the ALP supporters always have tunnel vision when it comes to who can lead a country better - God only help us if that is Paul Keating mark II. What a disaster the first was - debt, debt and more debt, interest rates sky high. The problem is here they can't face the truth, the overspending caused in the states adds to inflation.

James H:Libs are on Life Support and the general consensus is it should be switched off as there is major brain damage.also it will save power, which will help in fight against climate change that the Libs fought so hard against.

Mr Rudd did promise to get rid of Work-Choice. However he did not mention that he would replace with something more obscene. Once again we see how utterly useless the unions are- together the poor Aussie battler is doomed.

I think this is great news, the laziest of the lazy work for centrelink, it's a nightmare to deal with. Most of these people were probably employed just to hassle customers anyway. If you ever have the misfortune to have had to go into one of these offices you will rejoice at this news, I'm sure they could get rid of twice as many and nobody would notice. I have never heard a good work about a centrelink worker.

What a stupid move, how about getting rid of the ministers in NSW, no need for any of them, that would definitely assist with inflation - too much hot air and not enough action, the blow-out is caused by the state governments who are inept of curbing spending, look at the debacle with the Hospital in Bathurst, millions gone into a project which needs to be pulled down, you think that's not that cause of the inflation in this country, mismanagement causes inflation.

Dan, 100% correct. That is why people in Australia are so synical. States are spending beyond their means = inflation. Federal government refuses to acknowledge State debt problem and makes huge stunt of cutting federal spending. The average punter (if he can't see this) is a moron! We are one of the highest per capita governered countries in the world...why the hell would you have a second tier of government in a territory (ACT) that only exists to be the Federal government!

Graeme how would you know what it is like to deal with Centrelink. Sounds like you have spent a lot of time dealing with them. You say that the laziest of the lazy work at Centrelink but at least you have acknowledged that they WORK........ They are not a burden on tax payers. I can state for a fact that centrelink staff are not the laziest of the lazy they are understaffed and overworked. Get a life. These people have families to provide for and now what do they have. Good on you kev07 & CPSU

ron feedup, Yes Ron, I have had the misfortune of having to deal with these people, and I stick by my statement, if they moved any slower you would believe they were dead. That they will have to taste life on the other side of the counter will do them the world of good. Their families will be taken care of, how often do we hear how wonderfully generous the dole is. I have dealt with them both as an employer, and as a redundant employee, quite a difference in attitude, no sympathy from me.

A great disappointment by a government that obtains support and respect from the principle of defending the basic human right to have a decent and secure employment. You have been critical about the dismissal encouraged by lack of protection by the previous government. Now you yourself are committing this dismissal. God helps us in this world at that evil time.

WorkChoices for Government employees! Of course, when the ALP does it, it's OK huh? These are people with families and mortgages just like any other Australians. So they're "the laziest of the lazy" huh? That sounds like a generalisation to me. It makes me sick to my stomach that someone who spends all day condemning "racists" is just as quick to generalise away another category of human being. Oh and no, I *don't* work for Centrelink, I just can't stand hypocrites.

Ruddy knows if he sacks half of Centrelink, the gov. saves even more. Next will be the rule, one must have been dead 12 weeks before being eligable for govt. Assistance. We wont be able to afford to drive to centerlink, buy food or pay rent, will be taxed for standing on a footpath, while we give millions away to foriegn nations and car companies and zillion$ mining companies. As CITIZENS of this country, we get NOTHING but more Taxes and no jobs. Rudds good, his wife got a quid.

Rudd, You want to save a few Million? Cut the multi million dollar support we give our ex PMS. none of them deserve to keep draing the coffers. they get Superannuation, more than most of us ever will. Perhaqps the money saved there could go towards helping the pensioneers you loath to support! The pollies talk about DOLE bludgers, is an ex pm any different? they get monies for nothing, they get monies from boring others to death on talk circuits, so cut them free form our skirts.
