Budget rescue package: Treasurer vows to tame inflation

25/02/2008 8:34:00 PM.  | Joel Labi
This year's budget is being touted as an inflation fighter that will still contain a healthy surplus and some savings for taxpayers.

The Business Council has challenged the Rudd government to cut spending by more than 30 billion dollars over the next three years to bring inflation under control.

Treasurer Wayne Swan has told the ABC it's a big challenge considering what's been left behind.

“The reckless spending of the past few years has forced up inflation and it has been left on us to rein it in - and rein it in we shall,” Mr Swan said.

But Mr Swan would not be drawn on how the government would cut spending.

Gazza, to answer your question, I believe investing in infrastructure earlier simply brought forward inflation we are experiencing now. So Costello simply "delayed" the pain & let Australians enjoy the good time. Unfortunately the public didn't take the golden opportunity to use excess cash to reduce debt/mortgage, instead they indulged in spending spree, resulting in inflation pain now that is more that it should. Hence my comments that not fair to totally blame inflation on Howard.

There are two components of spending - govt & private sectors. All is good if govt wants to reduce spending but if the private sector continues its spending spree unfortunately the fight against inflation will not be as effective as it can be. In short term credit should continue to be tighten (ie interest rate rises or tigher lending rules) to restrict access of funds by the public. This will in term reduces money supply in the market which puts downward pressures on inflation.

Get rid of the state government ministers - that will help.

Once again trying to put blame on the previous Government for things they didn't cause. Pathetic you wood duck. “Cutting spending by more than 30 billion over the next three years”. Which organisations are going to miss out on necessary funding because of this decision? How many job cuts across Government agencies will there be? Only last week it was indicated 2000 jobs would go from Centre-Link. I suppose causing mass unemployment and preventing people from earning a wage will help stop them from spending and therefore help reduce inflation. What a great idea. NOT. Time will tell what the negative consequences of this decision will be.

Swan's only contyribution to this country since taking office is to whine and whinge about his predecessors. "it's a big challenge considering what's been left behind". Once again...whine, whine, whine but no action on State debt. Isn't he lucky that he didn't inherit ant Federal debt (unlike his predecessors)
