The Opposition Leader is pressuring former Howard government ministers, now sitting on the backbench, to make a decision quickly about whether they're staying in parliament.
Peter Costello, Alexander Downer, Peter McGauran and Mark Vaile all want a new life outside politics and are drawing on the public purse while they look for job.
Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson wants them to make up their minds and do it en-masse to stop rolling by-elections.
“A number of members, [if they] choose to retire sometime over the course of the year, then it would be preferable that they do it on the one day,” he suggested.
Labor frontbencher Stephen Conroy says the backbenchers need to come clean with the public.
“Those individuals need to consider whether they’re living up to their bargain with the Australian people.”
Meanwhile, Mr Downer and his wife Nicky are already exploring new options, hosting an Adelaide radio program as celebrity DJs.
Monday was day one (with four to go) of 'Mr and Mrs' on 5AA, Adelaide's main talk radio station.
It was uncomfortable listening, as the pair appeared have some 'marital moments' live on the air.
Mrs Downer revealed that her husband snores "loudly and a lot".
She also told Adelaide's biggest radio audience that Mr Downer is "bit of a bore" and "he needs to enjoy himself a bit more".
After a couple of hours on air together, the couple settled in and actually started to sound like they knew what they were doing.
Nicky Downer is being paid for the appearance.
Mr Downer, who is still the Federal member for the Adelaide seat of Mayo, provided his broadcasting services free of charge.
