Almost 1500 sites across NSW will undergo a facelift today as part of Clean up Australia day.

Sydney’s coast will be the focus of many groups for the events 19th year with recent rain washing rubbish into local waterways.

Claudette Rectorick from Sydney Aquarium says it makes her very upset that people don't look after the environment.

“It does make me angry because I do see that we have such a beautiful harbour and it does get destroyed so thoughtlessly by littering.”

“It’s the plastic bags that are really quite destructive – a whole bunch of animals thing they’re jellyfish and a whole bunch of animals depend on jellyfish for food.”

CEO Terrie Ann Johnson says it's not too late to get involved.

“The best way for people to find a site that’s close to them is to get onto our website which is cleanup.org.au.”

“Type in your postcode and that will tell you where the closest site to you is and then all you have to do is to turn up at the time which they’re meeting.”
