Goodbye petrol pumps! Charge ahead with electric cars

13/03/2008 8:37:00 AM.  | John Barrington

Australian-made all-electric cars could cost just $24 000 if sufficient Government orders were made for their bulk production.

Blade Electronic Vehicles, a Victorian based companies which converts new Hyundai Getz models to electric vehicles dubbed "Blade-Runners", presented one of it's finished products to Democrats Leader Lyn Allison at Parliament today.

The Zero Emissions, all-battery operated cars currently cost $49 000 to make, with only four in existence.

However, BEV predicts their commercial cost to be just $24 000 if the Government gave the green light on their mass production.

there are plenty of other companies that would produce these cars if there was a market. Think how goof it would be to pay no petrol

Guess you have never heard of Green Energy? Do a search on the Internet for "Green Energy" and get educated!

I would not hold my breath for the politicians to do anything... did you know there is a similar electric car readily available for less than k$20, if only the politicians had allowed it to be road legal in Australia?! I have driven one overseas and they are great. This site shows more : revaaustralia.com.au

It should be noted that while you can charge an electric car with dirty coal power you can equally charge it with 100% green power - at least with electric you get a choice. As for the allegation about politicians not doing anything - when they banned the REVA they did so for safty reasons. Just Google - reva crash test - to see the shocking images.

So charging your electric car with power generated from "dirty" coal is more damaging to the environment than burning fossil fuel which is growing ever more expensive and in shorter supply to eventually run out entirely in our lifetime? Not withstanding that although it's at a premium price, if you were really serious about going carbon neutral, for around 20k, 12k after the government rebate, you could convert your house to viable solar power and effectively not rely on "dirty" coal at all.

you must look at all the negatives, such as how far will this vehicle travel before it runs out of power, should you have to work late and you need to run lights on the way home, will you make it back, you decide to do a long trip to visit relatives ect, do you need to book and pay for accomodation after only a few hours travel, yeah not having to pay for fuel may be fantastic but wow, there are crtainly a few things that need to be cosidered especially people living in country areas...

I am all for this type of technology. A vehicle that runs on renewable energy, no carbon emissions, no fuel bills, great! As for how far will it run, where does the electrcity come from to recharge them?, there is this wonderful stuff called "solar energy" that once installed can recharge the car for free. Once these cars are allowed to be mass produced the technology can be improved because the market is there to fund research and improvements. No good reason not to proceed really.
