Australian swimmer Nick D'Arcy has spoken briefly for the first time since a bar brawl that may have cost him his Olympic dream, apologising for the scandal but refusing to comment further.
The 20-year-old has been charged with bashing former Commonwealth Champion Simon Cowley who will now need further surgery to repair a badly broken nose and jaw.
There has been no word from Olympic selectors yet about D'Arcy's future but the 20-year-old has told Channel 9, he's been assisting police.
"It's a pretty bad situation and I'm sorry about how it turned out but that's all I've got to say."
D'Arcy's mother Sue says her son is heartbroken but he will have the full support of his family.
"He's certainly not going to be by himself. We're going to be with him. He needs all our support at the moment.
"He's very devastated as you can imagine."
Close friend and Olympian Craig Stevens says Cowley was badly concussed, and woke up in horrific pain.
"He can't remember what happened, he just woke up on a stretcher and obviously was in a fair bit of pain."
D'Arcy flew out of Sydney today and says he has sought legal advice.
