A man in the US who claims he is pregnant has laid rumours to rest that he was staging an April Fools Day joke, by appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show with medical proof.
34-year-old transgender male Thomas Beatie, is five months pregnant with his and his wife Nancy’s child.
Beatie released a statement in the Advocate last month revealing his extraordinary situation, although people were not convinced.
There was speculation Beatie was either part of a new television series that plays jokes on the media, or he was staging an April Fools prank.
But the world will soon get a glimpse of the pregnant Oregon man when he appears in a first ever television interview with talk show guru Oprah Winfrey, airing on Thursday.
In the interview, Beatie appears with his wife Nancy and their doctor, with evidence such as ultrasound scans.
The Oprah Winfrey website has already leaked excerpts from the interview, where Beatie and his wife speak about past relationships and their journey through pregnancy.
"I'm a person and I have the right to have my own biological child," Beatie told Winfrey.
Beatie is able to carry a child because he was born a woman, had a sex change to remove his breasts and underwent testosterone therapy, but kept his female reproductive system.
He stopped taking his testosterone injections around eight years ago, when the couple made the decision for him to carry their child.
In his statement released to the Advocate last month, when asked how he feels about the pregnancy Beatie replied: “Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am.”
