Role model or roll model? Miss England finalist whips up war of words

4/04/2008 11:58:00 AM.  | Anil Lambert-Patel
The first-ever size 16 finalist in the Miss England competition has triggered a plus-sized controversy in the Old Dart.

17-year-old Chloe Marshall made waves by promoting herself as an inspiration to ‘curvy’ girls across the UK.

Originally, hailed for breaking the Miss England mould of stick thin beauties, Miss Marshall is now copping backlash from the notoriously fickle English press.

The Daily Mail published an article by dietician Monica Grenfell slamming the teenage beauty therapist for promoting unhealthy, lazy lifestyles.

“Chloe is a stark reminder that obesity is now virtually normal in our society - and we should all be hanging our heads in shame,” she said.

But Miss Marshall is sticking solidly by her guns, telling British tabloid The Sun, “I want to show girls out there that it is possible to be beautiful and not a standard size zero.”

With her clothes on (ie NOT her bikini) she looks attractive. A full piece would have looked much more attractive. From a middle-aged, overweight female.

She looks awful. She may not be hideously overweight for her height but aged 17 she deffinitly shouldn't be a size 16 ! I honestly don't think she depicts an average english woman, she looks unhealty and unnatractive, and she calls the other finalists 'beanpoles' they're mostly size tens for god sake. Obesity is apparently now compleatly acceptable in the uk. It's disgusting.

i think she looks ok even in the bikini, she's living proof you don't have to be a size 10 weight 30kgs and vommit all your food to get along in life, good on her, she should give anyone who doesn't like it the magic finger, this whole article is proof that the definition of obese is fataly flawed even though she could probably stand to loose maybe 5kg for her long term health i dare say she's probably healthier than any of us sydneysiders combind and then maybe the rest of the poms to,

I appreciate what she is trying to do. But I still find I'm happier walking 5km in 1 hour each day.

I wonder if those who are throwing the stones look better with or without clothes themselves! no one is perfect and that's the way things are and should be accepted - obesity is not a good thing but that's thanks to the takeaway and laziness - this person isn't obese and if she is God help those who really are - the problem is women are expected to meet the model image - does anyone's wife or husband fit that mould - get real - we are talking about a real woman here - not air brushed but real!

Good on her!!! Only a jealous pig would critasize someone whos trying to help stop teenage girls thinking they have to starve themselves to look pretty. Grenfell dosent think of all those girls out there, slowly killing themselves by starvation. Good Luck Chloe!!!
