Sydney Swans' Barry Hall has apologised to Brent Staker after flooring him with a left hook in what he called a 'mind snap' during Saturday's game at ANZ stadium.

Hall has been charged with striking and faces a lengthy suspension after punching Eagles defender Brent Staker in an apparent moment of madness.

Hall said he was shocked when he watched the replay.

"It was just a reaction sort of thing.

"Certainly, watching the vision afterwards, it looked terrible and as the match review said, it was unacceptable."

The incident came in the 25th minute of the first term as Hall wrestled with Staker behind play.

Hall appeared to suddenly lose patience, turning to deliver a big left hook to Staker's jaw and laying him out for almost three minutes.

Staker took no further part in the match, sitting hunched on the interchange bench even when his teammates approached Hall angrily at quarter time.

He appeared pale and groggy as he wandered around the boundary line, under the supervision of the West Coast doctors.

Swans coach Paul Roos said he didn't see the clash but that Hall is likely to miss several weeks anyway after injuring his wrist late in the last quarter.

"Being down on the bench, I can't get to see the replay.

"But I don't think he'll be playing too much for the next however many weeks anyway. I think he might have broken his wrist."

Hall is believed to have broken his wrist when he ran into an exposed section of the fence.

The Swans, who are fourth on the ladder with a 2-1 record after three rounds, face defending premiers Geelong next week.

What a game, what a hit. He will get at least 6 weeks for that. But, the question I ask. Why was Hall being held behind play? Technically, that is a free kick to him. I guess he will be keeping his name... Big Bad Bazza!

Shane - it will probably take 6 weeks for the broken wrist to fix, anyway! Go Bazza!

There is no excuse for hitting. There is also no excuse for illegal play. I'm sure Staker can't remember doing anything wrong. But it goes to the adage 'Pick on people your own size.' I thought WCE were bad winners, now I think they are bad losers too.

I watched the game from the third quarter (missing the first two) and thought the standard of play was excellent. Then at the end I say a replay for the first time of Mr Barry Hall punching out another player. His eyes rolled back before he hit the ground. I felt physically sick. Barry, I am a fan. Please give me an explanation. If its not believable, I hope your gone for the season....sorry !

This was not sport, it was assault and he should be arrested, charged and sentenced accordingly, this was nothing less than a criminal act! I am sick to death of these common thugs who happen to be able to play a sport at an elite level being granted immunity over such acts. At the very least suspend this worm for the season. "I had a brain snap" What bullshit!

Matthew, no one has "granted him imminity". He will be punished. That's the way it is. He knows it was wrong. That's life. Vacate the moral high ground and get a life too....?

I think Gazza Benson is on the money there. As for Matthew Dilosa's comment. I am a Swans fan and agree that there should be a lengthy suspension, perhaps even the remainder of the season, but "criminal act", you must be kidding. Another thought, I'm not condoning this for one minute, but I wonder what everyone's percepetion would be if the punch happened to not hit the mark and both players continued to fight.

I'm not saying what Barry Hall did was right. But to all umpires. One of the rules is no holding another player, yet all we see are players grabbing at each other, and on many of occasions you umpires turning a blind eye until it suits you to blow the whistle. Then you report a player who has become so frustrated that he retaliates.Well i'm sorry, but I beleive all umpires are just as guilty. If you can't abide by the rules then you should face the tribunal. Hold your head high Barry.
