Healthy dogs used for surgery training

13/04/2008 6:21:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton
Veterinary students at Melbourne University are operating on healthy and sometimes pregnant dogs, then killing the animals.

The dogs are anaesthetised before the operation and then euthanised before they wake up.

Dr Hugh Wirth from the RSPCA says it is a cruel way of teaching.

"At the present time what's happening is an age-old custom where live animals that are perfectly healthy are operated on an never allowed to recover. We don't think that's right and proper."

One former student said she was given a pregnant bitch carrying seven pups for surgery practice. She said other students were given pups as young as two-months old.

Other students have claimed the laboratories were often unsupervised, meaning trainees had to leaf through text books as they operate.

Dean of Veterinary Science Professor Ken Hinchcliff says training on live animals is common practice.

"Use of live animals is a small but vital part of our surgery teaching program before clinical training," Prof Hinchcliff told News Ltd.

Prof Hinchcliff refused to reveal where the dogs came from, saying only they were "donated".

It is believed the university advertised for unwanted pets and former farm or breeding dogs.

Greyhound Victoria has admitted it provided dogs to the university.

It is an essential practice. I do not want doctors practicing on people at the start of their careers. I would welcome an alternative. My preference would be to use people convicted of PETA activism, but I recognize that will never happen. I am aware that these animals are living, thinking emotional beings (the dogs, not PETA).

How are they going to train vets to have the best interests of the animals, their clients, in mind if they are treated as disposible objects to try out on, and discard? We don't do this to humans to learn. The problem is that so many dogs are available because there are thousands of unwanted pets around. Because desexing is not mandatory, they can be bred in backyards and in intensive "puppy farms" as pet shop items. So many healthy dogs and cats are euthanised in a country of pet lovers.

What do you think happens to disabled human beings!no outcry because it's all covered up and those who report it get sacked - no union support, no govt support- disgraced and humiliated in the process. It's not great to hear about animal abuse but people abuse needs to be considered a high priority especially those who are defenceless and that includes the aged who are frail and elderly in nursing homes -abused by starvation, injuries until they succumb - human experimentation happens also!
