Heath Ledger used Joker to mask personal problems

15/04/2008 11:50:00 AM.  | Jesse Perez

While Heath Ledger's untimely death came as a shock to the world, the alarm bells were sounding well before his tragic demise, during the filming of his last movie - "The Dark Knight".

An on-set source revealed that Ledger was advised to seek professional help for his personal problems, but relied on his character of the Joker to act as a mask to hide his internal traumas.

"Heath refused to talk to anyone out-of-character," the source said. "If you tried to communicate with him normally instead of the Joker, he would just ignore you.

"He would often come to the set to hang out even on his days off in character, freaking everyone out. Toward the end of filming, he was warned by people that he’d gone too far, but it was almost like he couldn't connect with those who cared for him anymore."

Ledgers fastidious commitment to the method acting approach, to literally 'become' the crazed Joker, saw him locked himself in his apartment for an entire month.

Another source on the set of "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", a film Ledger was in the process of working on when he died, said that Heath couldn't "snap out" of the character and "lost sense" of who he was.

"Heath couldn't be himself anymore and that terrified him," said the source.

“When you have people talking s—t about you all the time, of course it's hard to stay levelheaded and remember who you really are,” the insider said.

Speculation is also emerging that studio Warner Brothers may be considering cutting scenes from the new film showing Ledger's Joker in a body bag, after test audiences became distressed during a prescreening.

"It's highly likely that that will be modified," an insider said.

Ok, its sounds to me like he had a nervous breakdown on the set of the Batman movie. Anyone with a shred of common sense should have physically put him into a car and taken him to the emergency room. To me it seems a little pointless to try to talk sense to someone who is clearly that unstable. Why, why, didn't someone take a stand and say, "Enough, Heath, you are going to the ER, & its not up to debate!?" Seems to me that's what a friend would do. Guess hindsight is 20/20.

You can't put an adult into a car and have him put in a mental institution just because he wants to pretend he is the Joker 24/7. That neither makes him a threat to himself or others.

I worked with Heath Ledger on his last film shoot 'The Imaginarium...' and finished filming with him into the small hours 20th January. Heath was completely professional and hard working and was always prepared to give more. Heath had no problem being himself off set and chilled out with other crew members in between takes. Heath was battling flu, and dressed like Pierrot in white satin on a bitterly cold January night on a moonlit London street and his performance is pure, enchanting magic

To anyone who worked with Heath on the TDK or the Imaginarium sets: I'm so grateful to hear testimonies from level headed people that recently worked with him and not only from those anonymous (paid) “sources” that don’t hesitate to smear his good name! I would like to hear from people working on those sets, or who came in close contact with Heath last year for other reasons. I am together with others contacting the media about this smearing campaign.Email: leaveheathalone@hotmail.com

This is pure stinkin' horse-hockey. Daniel Day Lewis, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Gerard Butler, all have refused to drop character during an entire shoot. It was to keep them from losing the character's "headspace" & keep consistency, since takes can be spaced minutes, even an hour apart. As for him not feeling like himself on Parnassus, we all go through identity crisis' after major life changes. It's not the same as being ill. This is making a big deal out of speculation and innuendo.

You obviously have crap sources. Why don't you let Heath rest in peace and stop badmouthing him? Don't you have a freaking life? Maybe you should quit whatever job you have now and find a better one where they accept lies. Good luck.
