Rudd promises tax cuts for low and middle income earners

18/04/2008 8:13:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens

Low and middle income earners will receive tax cuts of up to $1,000 a year from July.

Leaked treasury documents reveal people who earn less than $50,000 a year, will be the big winners in the Rudd government’s raft of tax cuts.

A person on a salary of 40 thousand dollars will have their tax reduced by $20 a week, more than three times the average annual cut under the Coalition.

Middle income earners on $50,000 a year will receive $15 dollars a week off their tax bill.

Other cuts have also been flagged for higher wages and Mr Rudd has told Channel Nine, the people deserve it.

“We believe, based on the example you gave just before about the cost pressures on working families, we will give them every bit of support we can, and that’s why we’re determined to go ahead with tax cuts.”

$20 dollars a week... now thats bloody insulting thats $1040 dollars a year....... if they really want to make a difference they should remove or partially remove the fuel taxes, after all it's not like the money from them is actaully going into repairing roads..... i dare a labor voter to argue that one and proove it

Chris, I have a solution. If you do not want $1040 I will give you my bank account details and you can direct debit it into my account. Alternatively, you can take a drive up the Pacific Highway and see what work is going on, then you will see where some of your petrol tax dollars are going.

David, I am not sure which section of the Pacific Hwy you are referring to, but the section near where I live is in pretty miserable condition. Also the highway is jammed most of the day not to mention the peak hour traffic! Just for your information.

what i want is some serious solutions to the serious problems we have in nsw , i've driven up the pacific highway it's a damn sight better than the death trap roads down here in hoxton park we've got pot holes 1/2 a foot deep and roads that flood when it rains.. any extra dollar is welcome but it's a futile tax cut because rent on average has gone up by at least double that, not to mention the fuel and grocery cost increases.

WO, Drive to the Gold Coast, its full of work under progress cutting out dangerous sections and making it a duel carriage-way. Sure, sections like those at Turramurra may be full of potholes, but there are only a very small portion of the millions of KMS of roads around this country. A few billion dollars does not go very far these days unfortunately.

Rudd knows what he will do for taxpayers but when asked about the minimu wage said he "didn't know". This guy is a pretender. Albanese has just forced up fuel tax and Rudd is going to give it back and be the hero!

Are these the me too John Howard tax cuts? If so why the claim that these cuts are three times the tax cuts delivered under the Howard Government when these are the Howard Governments promised tax cuts? Over the last three years the net income tax paid by people earning $30,000.00 or less has fallen by 45% under the Howard Government. This means that if this so called Labor tax is going to deliver a three times better outcome, as stated, it means that the Government would be paying the people earning less than $30,000.00 instead of them paying tax.

Mr Howard delivered an average real increase of over 2% each year on wages. The previous ALP government delivered a real fall in wages. Rudd's copying of tax cuts mean nothing if he doesn't deliver on the rest of the economic package.

The front bar at the pub says this Rudd bloke is full of crap. And they are right. By the time his policies come into effect, most of us will be retired or dead. By the end of this year many people won't be able to afford to drive to work or buy food, let alone pay the mortgage and the household bills. What's the answer Mr Rudd?

David Daniel, My union has delivered wage increases of 4% per year consistently since 1997, it had nothing to do with Mr. Howard. In 1998 Mr. Howard attempted to reduce the wage of a Stevedore to a mere $45,000 per year. Remember? In fact our new EBA will deliver a 15% increase over a three year period as opposed to the companies demands and threats of using 'workchoices' to renew the previous agreement over a five year term. So do the math and join the dots, it has nothing to do with Mr. Howard!

WO. And Sean fails to tell us that the waterfornt was crippling Australia until (early in his first term) Howard & Costello put things right. Remember Patricks? Remember the shutdown of the wharves? Now at 4% pa Ambrose'e MWU (or whatever) is still managing to screw the country. I think that's what he's telling us? Anyway, tell him that unions are in terminal decline..he can't argue with that data!

Sean, your comments are misleading, but do show one thing. Mr Howard was scrupulously fair. I notice that the ALP have a headline saying that all Australians will have to work longer, harder and for less. That sounds like ALP and Union administration, in a nutshell.
