Rudd closes 2020, Nelson looks to May 13

20/04/2008 8:00:00 PM.  | Yoni Bashan
The Prime Minister will begin looking over dozens of ideas which have come out of the 20-20 summit with many likely to be destined for the scrap heap.

Some of the main ideas include an Australian republic, a wide-ranging review of the tax system, and a ban on junk food advertising for kids.

Kevin Rudd's promising to scrutinise every proposal and respond to each one by the end of the year.

The Opposition's vowed to do the same, and give priority to those focusing on drought-proofing the country and federation.

However, with so many ideas to choose from - not all will be implemented.

Some will be re-shaped, others put aside and the rest either accepted or torn up entirely.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson says while some of the proposals are worth examining, many aren't likely to be of any benefit.

Budget scrap heap

The touted ideas are not new, will not benefit Australians or won't be implemented well. Take your pick, there are any number of ways to foul up, and who will be around to declare that the emperor has no clothes? Yet despite the flim flam, well meaning people are trying to be positive. It saddens me that Aboriginal people will cheer on their abusers as they take their resources and hope. Hospitals will not run better. Nor will trains be better managed, although they could be.

Of course the opposition will doom all outcomes to failure. The fact that they are are a sorry desert of any ideas whatsoever is of course irrelevant, ...Not!. Kevin Rudd is doing a fantastic job, involving the whole country in healthy debate. As Sir William Deane said, "government by the people". I know it is negative but John Howard wanted political control and NO debate. He made everyone's input seem superfluous and not necessary. Disgusting patriarchy! Let us celebrate the freedom from it!

The May 13 Budget will be the FIRST activity of the Rudd Government that is (1) mostly their own work, (2) open to scrutiny from more experts than you can poke a stick at, (3) challengable outside the protection of parliament and (4) performance measured by other governments around the world. I believe May 13 is when THIS government starts being assessed and the media assisted honeymoon ends. Let's see.
