The ABC has come under fire for commercials that use world poverty statistics to satirise the broadcasters chances of winning a gold logie at this year's awards.
The commercials have been branded as pathetic and tasteless, and it's thought the spoken text of the controversial ads may even contravene the ABC act.
Monsignor David Cappo, the State Government's Social Inclusion Commissioner, has accused the ABC of abusing its position as the national broadcaster.
"It's pathetic," Cappo told News Limited, who went on to say it attacked the "powerless and most vulnerable."
South Australian Senator Shane Birmingham, a member of the Senate Standing committee on Environment, Communications and the Arts, has called for the ads to be withdrawn immediately.
"While I accept questions of taste can be complex, the outrage expressed by many ABC viewers at both the promotion's content nature and its very purpose suggests this is not something the ABC audience supports, said Birmingham.
"I urge the ABC to immediately withdraw the promotion from airing and to review its editorial policies to clarify whether or not this this type of promotion is acceptable."
