Little Venice: a health threat to Sydney residents

26/04/2008 10:24:00 AM.  | Erin Maher
Claims a man-made waterway in Sydney’s south poses a significant threat to our health and environment are being played down by the NSW state Government.

The Alexandra canal is described as the most severely contaminated canal in the southern hemisphere, with Do-Not-Disturb restrictions placed on the area.

That's raised Opposition concerns it's too easy for a breach.

But John Dengate from the Department of Environment and Climate Change says the current measures are adequate.

“There river’s there naturally and mediate themselves.”

“Look there may be some technology in the future that can deal with contamination like this but right now the best thing any government can do and has done is basically ensure that the sediments are not disturbed.”
