EXCLUSIVE: Broadband project may be blocked

30/04/2008 7:20:00 AM.  | Yoni Bashan
A key election promise to install high speed broadband across the country is about to come to a grinding halt.

Labor needs more than $4 billion to fund its broadband agenda, but half the money has been locked away in a special communications fund.

A senate inquiry will report back today and give the government the green light to dip in and remove the cash.

The opposition has been against the plans from the outset, and key sources have told Macquarie News that plans are underway to block the project for good.

It means the government won’t have enough money to roll out its high speed internet plans, and could risk breaking a key election promise.

Maybe they should have worked out all the details before they made the promise to deliver. How many other things will not be delivered because Labor didnt do their homework . The buck stops with Mr Rudd and we all know he will just blame John Howard and the previous Government.

At what point will we start to wise up that all of Labor's election promises were big on broad public appeal and short on detail and effective costings? As for continually blaming the former government for our current woes, the Rudd Government has now now been in power for almost six months. The last time inflation was over four per cent was the last time Labor was in power federally. Coincidence? I don't think so. The honeymoon is over, guys.

Agree with you Tim-now lets hope the Media can get over their flirtations with the left and start researching and reporting in the interest of all Australians.

Des, regrettably I think the media (Live News included) just publish the Rudd Spin pressreleases "as is". I don't see any evidence of anything analytical?

OK Mr Rudd, how come you cancelled on the broadband rollout contract the Libs had SIGNED with Optus just two weeks ago and now this. Not surprising really we hear of "tit for tat". It's like a school yard brawl. Can both sides of the house please grow up and get on with the job!

Finally we get some action with our Broadband communications, thanks Prime Minister for making decisions more than the Liberal communications Ministers ever did, they were hopeless and achieved nothing within the industry and had 11 years two give Australians a better and faster service; Thank god we changed the Government.

Maybury, Rudd cancelled the signed Optus deal and now cannot finance his own election promise! How thick are you? This is another Rudd "re-branding" attempt that has failed woefully. Thank God this all ends in 2010.

The communications fund money was set aside so the interest earned was to be invested in communication infrastructure for those living in rural and remote areas. Not to be squandered on giving those already with broadband, access to faster broadband. I sincerely hope the senate blocks this bill as this is not what the $2 billion was set aside to do. The government seems to have no plan for rural under served premises and is hell bent on removing any funds set aside for such purposes..

I always thought his promises were empty. Fast broadband. School revolution. Just talk. But under ALP, talk can be an expensive waste of time.
