Police stream into Redfern in huge coordinated raid

30/04/2008 5:17:00 PM.  | Jason Morrison

Seventeen people have been arrested in one of the biggest police raids on Redfern's Eveleigh Street in years.

The raids were coordinated and large, the peak of it over 100 police were involved, bursting out of undercover vehicles.

Officers in bullet proof vests, some carrying rams and chainsaws raided five homes at the bottom of The Block area, in the troubled Sydney suburb.

Some officers from specialist police squads had guns drawn - they ran in through the homes and are most searching through property inside.

They burst into seven homes which are still being searched for drugs, particularly heroin which is a major problem in the area.

Seventeen people have so far been arrested with sniffer dogs being sent through homes, and already some drugs have been seized.

Superintendant Mark Walton says it was time they cracked down on the area.

“I think down in this area it’s certainly been a couple of years since an operation of this extent has occurred.”

The atmosphere was hostile as it all happened, but things have since calmed and police remain on patrol right down Eveleigh Street.

If there are millions of dollars in the walls, why am I asked for to "Gimme a Dollah bro?" every time I get off at Redfern Station?!?

You're porbably asked that because they've spent all the $ on the drugs that police seized today...

You are a moron James Stack. Like the police are getting commands from Morris Iemma, sitting at his desk freaking out about power, to go and raid houses in Redfern on a vague tip-off. Redfern LAC couldnt give a stuff about politics, they are sick of drug dealers infecting the already rotten streets of The Block, if they get a tip they act. But fools like you make every issue about the political side you have chosen. Not everything is about politics.

To those who have made comments which doubt the vaildity of the police actions today, all I can say is that you really need to take a real hard look at yourselves. It is you that are making society the way it is with your narrow minded ramblings. Is it because it is an aboriginal community that you are cynical? Who cares, what community so long as the police are endeavouring to take control of our streets again. Those civil right left wing idiots continue to hold everybody to ransom.

I think such raids would provide results if they were done more often too. We shouldn't be encouraging ghettos. We need a state government to work to improve the place, and not just raid it when they feel they need an upper to balance out their other failures. I hope they got something big, because if they just did this on a whim because of Iemma's ratings, then that would be corrupt.

Great video. Heavy handed policing at it's best

I'm curious as to how that was "heavy handed"? They ran up and in with a search warrant...or do you prefer Police to sit out the front, knock several times and ask nicely while the dealers are flushing the drugs down the toilet or running out the back door etc? Leave the Policiing to the Police.

The people who still perpetuate these racist ideoligies make me sick. Its easy for these people to sit up in there nice big houses in their wealthy neighbourhoods and go on with their KKK yarns. I put this to you, why dont the police target the major source of the herion, instead of targeting fullas who are just supporting their habit and making ends meet.Get the people who are making millions of dollars off all this, stop stereotyping this problem as a Aboriginal problem, ITS NOT
