'Chair sniffing' MP faces leadership challenge

1/05/2008 6:55:00 AM.  |
A West Australian Liberal MP is likely to call for a vote on the party leadership today following the chair-sniffing scandal involving Opposition Leader Troy Buswell.

Party whip Graham Jacobs will call for the spill this morning during a news conference outside Perth's Parliament House, says opposition treasury spokesman Steve Thomas.

Mr Buswell has been under intense pressure after admitting to sniffing the chair of a woman Liberal staffer in a Parliament House office in October 2005.

The staffer at the centre of the sniffing incident, who has asked not be named, said Mr Buswell, then deputy to former Liberal leader Matt Birney, lifted the chair and sniffed it in front of her and other people "to get a laugh".

Despite receiving strong support from colleagues, party president Barry Court and federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson yesterday, the incident is thought to have upset some within party ranks.

"(Dr Jacobs) is, obviously, sad and angry about the whole mess," Dr Thomas told AAP.

I am still unable to find anything amusing about this incident and I am unable to find the humour in "lifting the chair that a female staffer sat on and sniffing it in front of her to get a laugh". This behavior is seriously deluded. I am more then concerned that people with such behavior problems can be elected to parliament and maintain their positions. Mr. Buswell should resign, to say the least it is sexual harassment. It would make a sensational negative advertisement come election time.

Sean, I concur. Imagine the advertisement "would you trust a chair sniffer with Western Australia's $3 billion dollar economy"?

Well we voted for somebody who eats their earwax so why not a chair sniffer. But you are right his actions are unacceptable and he does not deserve to be leader.

Just like the puerile sense of humor which claimed Brogden. Even Nick Greiner was done in by something which wasn't illegal, but which a campaign was put forward which tipped him over. The ability of the ALP to manufacture such campaigns should be of concern to any wishing for a healthy democracy. I think it inconceivable that Paul Keating or Sean Ambrose might approve of Buswell regardless of his activity. When kids go Nya nya, I think they have won their battle. When adults do it they haven't.
