Taliban soldiers accuse Diggers of mistreatment

9/05/2008 8:33:00 AM.  |
Australian troops in Afghanistan have been accused of mistreating a number of Taliban detainees.

Defence says our commanders have ordered an immediate investigation and we always take these kind of claims extremely seriously.

ABC Radio reports the allegations were made by four members of the Taliban, who were captured after Australian soldier Jason Marks was killed during a battle in southern Oruzgan province last month.

The ABC says a senior Afghan commander in the south passed on the allegation during a meeting of local commanders and used the word "mistreated" not "abused".

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says he'll get a report on the outcome of the investigation will be reported to him.

He says Australia takes any suggestions of misconduct by our combat forces in the field very seriously.

Why is it that those that give no justice and mistreat people, claim mistreatment? This is as absurd as you can get!

Yes Magee, this is war. A war that we have absolutely no justifiable reason for being there. Once again Australians have been made to go fight in an unjust war that has nothing to do with us - further cementing our reputation as a lap dog to America. Unless you think taking control of a country to ensure a gas and oil pipeline is constructed is fair ? Oh yeah thats right, the taliban blew up two buildings. I wonder how many America has blown up in the name of 'freedom' ...2000 ? 20000 ? 200000?

Coward (your name says it all), so we should stand by and let the Taliban mutilate women and murder the innocent. I can tell you. the Taliban did more than just "blow uo 2 buildings". And forget the "oil" crap, that is not why the west are there - that is just popularist left wing crap thrown around by your unthinking mates. Which bit of factual history do you want to re-write this time? Australia is supporting the democratically elected government of Afghanistan.

I understand that the terrorist manuals suggest that such ambit claims be made. It makes it more difficult to credit should it actually ever happen. But then the Taliban are fighting the soldiers through the media, not trying to win the ground war. In the media, suicide tactics work.
