Teacher sacked for nude photo shoot 'would do it again'

9/05/2008 9:50:00 PM.  |
A Sydney primary school teacher on suspension for appearing nude in a women's magazine would gladly strip and pose again, her husband says.

Lynne Tziolas, 24, is launching legal action to be reinstated to her position at Narraweena Public School, and her students' families are rallying in support by organising a petition.

The NSW Department of Education and Training says Ms Tziolas' suspension follows complaints from "several" parents at the school.

"Several Narraweena parents complained to the school about photographs and inappropriate sexual comments in a Cleo magazine article," a department spokesman said in a statement.

Ms Tziolas' husband Antonios, 45, disagrees.

"The photo shoot was perceived as a problem by some people in the community and the suspension came after one anonymous complaint by a concerned parent," Mr Tziolas, also a qualified teacher, told AAP today.

Ms Tziolas has been a full-time temporary Year One teacher for two years at the school, in Sydney's northern beaches district.

She was informed by letter last Friday that she was suspended for four weeks on full pay, effective immediately.

"The school ceased the teachers' engagement and the Department of Education and Training Employee Performance and Conduct Branch is investigating," the department spokesman said.

Mr Tziolas said his wife wanted to return to the same school.

"She would be happy to be reinstated back at Narraweena," he said.

The couple decided to be part of the naked photo shoot - which appeared in a sealed section of the magazine along with photographs of nine other couples and comments about their sex lives - after they were approached by a friend who was unable to take part.

"We got some beautiful loving shots that we wanted for a keepsake and we were paid to do it," Mr Tziolas said.

"We were honest. Yes, we're both teachers. Yes, we have sex, and yes, we are loving and committed to each other.

"What we did we both stand by. We would do it again."

Mr Tziolas said his wife's suspension was "outrageous" and he hoped the situation would soon be resolved.

"It is outrageous that the (education) department has had this knee-jerk reaction," he said.

This is no knee-jerk reaction. This is a carefully measured response to inappropriate behaviour for a childrens educator.

I wonder if this teacher has another agenda. Why does she continue to stir up trouble knowing that it is a sensitive issue. Why cant she respect the important principle of protecting children from unecessary, potentialy damaging behaviour.?

It is a public school. What do parents want? I can think of heaps of jokes about the kids asking about the tattoos and the like, but at the end of the day, it isn't classroom behavior which is being targeted, is it?

I've been hearing about this on the radio,& I now get to see what all the fuss is about.I onced worked in Day Care, & yes I can see the issue with the whole thing, But really unless a adult or older sibling shows one of her students, the pic where are they going to see it.Its not full frontal ,& its not in playboy. You cant see any genatalia. Taken on a photographers view its a great photo.Give the couple a break.Good luck to the both of you , most would not have the guts to do what you did

One in the profession of educating 6 year olds should be the kind of person who is sensible, compassionate and modest; lead by example, or as the NSW DET puts it "teach our children well". Primary school is supposed to be a time of innocence, free from the worries of life and sexual permissiveness of modern western society. One who appears nude in magazines does not represent the best interests of the children. It was forseeable that such criticism would arise, yet she still appeared nude.

It just goes to show a university education doesn't necessarily make you smarter. Apart from the fact that it wasn't a very wise decision on the part of these two people, while they are still in the teaching profession, it shows the stupidity of the education dept. in NOT sacking that foul mouthed lesbian teacher in Victoria who, it is reported, talks about her lesbian activities to her pupils. I know which one I'd rather have teaching children.

This is ridiculous - I have primary school daughters in a public school. I have no problem with this women teaching my children. As long as she doesn't front up to school butt naked. Perosnally i would never do this, my morality wouldn't allow it, but this is choice her and her husband made....this doesn't make them bad people. They are married, education and employed - WHATS THE PROBLEM. This is not pornography you can't see anything at all, and even it is children should not be reading CLEO.

If this isn't anything than anyone terminated from a govt dept illegally should also be re-instated-isn't that right? I find this nothing but hypocritical if this person gets reinstated & not others -of course they have done nothing wrong-she didn't turn up naked to class but then you have others who do nothing wrong either and are victimised- why oh learned ones? recent example is the Okropolous case being exposed and the woman who did it loses her job-she didn't pose naked in Cleo either?

What this person does in their own time is their own business. Nobody has asked you to look at the pictures so why don't you leave her alone.

Disgusted Melbourne...you "expected more". How much more? Didn't she get all her gear off? Looked Ok to me - but let us all know how much more a Melbournite expected? I believe you had pensioners "getting their gear off" today, following the successful cabbies "topless" protest earlier in the month. Go Melbourne!

We don't live in the 1940 as you might all know it's 2008 and its a shame to think that alot of people are still in the early years. Its not as if she's in the picture with a boyfriend it's her husband of 4 years .With the way marriages go sour these days if they can keep theirs going and feel free to talk about why cann't they.Their should be no shame in what they do in their bedroom. We know that the ones that complain are the ones that would like a sex life like theirs. You go girl.

Why does ANYONE feel the need to be naked and discuss their sex lives in a magazine? It's not a case of 'guts' it's a question of why would you want to? And they can't use the 'what we do in our own time defense'- it was in a magazine anyone can buy. It may not be as public as streaking across a football field with 1 million people watching live on TV, but it's still public.
