The risk of injuries to infants and toddlers could be halved if car seats are placed in the centre of the back seat.

A United States study has found as few as a quarter of children under three involved in an accident are seated in the middle seat - even though it could reduce their risk of injury.

The report authors acknowledge putting child seats in the middle can make it difficult for parents to get toddlers into the car and make it hard for anyone else to sit in the back.
