James Packer bins Scientology

10/05/2008 2:00:00 PM.  | Tim Brunero

Billionaire Australian businessman James Packer has turned his back on Scientology as the religion faces growing opposition from online campaign group ‘Anonymous’ for its controversial teachings.

Packer’s closest confidants have told Fairfax the media and gaming mogul believes he no longer needs the religion he was introduced to by high profile Scientologist and friend Tom Cruise.

Packer began practicing the religion, becoming its richest member, at one of the lowest points of his life - when he had lost $350 million on the failed One.Tel business, had broken up with wife Jodhi Meares and was overweight.

Packer may have also had trouble reconciling his ballooning casino empire with Scientologist beliefs which frown on gambling.

Scientology's founder, L. Ron Hubbard, has denounced gambling in the past.

"An obsessive gambler is a psychotic just like a drug addict or an alcoholic," Hubbard wrote in 1977.

Scientology has been under increasing attack in the last year by an online group called ‘Anonymous’.

The group labelled Scientology as a cult and has carried out hacker-style attacks on its websites as well as physical protests at its churches around the world.

The group accuse Scientology of brainwashing, charging exorbitant fees for its teachings, of having a policy of disconnecting adherents from their families and of harassing opponents of the belief system.

In recent years Scientology’s campaigns against psychiatry and videos of celebrity practitioner Tom Cruise extolling the virtues of the religion have also brought negative press to the religion, especially in the United States.

By co-incidence the leaking of Packer’s disillusionment with the religion coincides with another international day of protest by ‘Anonymous’ today.

Scientology has a history of gettings its claws into the businesses of adherents, purging them of non-scientologisits and bleeding the profits . Good thinking Mr Packer. Stephen Kent: Oh yes. Scientology wants to gets its techniques in on managerial levels, and then require companies to use Hubbard's technology and then send a percentage of the company's profits back to World Institute of Scientology Enterprises.

Lex, if this was "good thinking" why was Mr Packer such a mug to get sucked in?

Geoff, scientology has a policy of finding out what people want, and then promising it to them. It has fooled a few people, some of them smart and well-intentioned. Of course, scientology fails to deliver on its promises because it is a fantasy pyramid scheme. By the time people find this out, some of them are too committed to get out. The cult is collapsing fast. I think the long time member/victims need support and understanding. It takes guts to admit a mistake, especially a big one.

I don't pretend to follow the thinking of wealthy people. Their ideas are well published in their late teens and early twenties, not notable thinking times for people, although it is also the time when people make lifelong sincere decisions regarding religion. Remembering Kerry, I think it understandable that James would make an honest mistake with devotion.

Who really cares-Packer is just one of those who wants to be noticed with all "rich and famous"- the likes of Cruise, Travolta etc- do you really think these people get sucked into this rubbish - the only suckers are the ones who have nothing and give away everything they have and become dependant upon this cult to survive and to be honest it's all a tax lurk for all the rich and famous and they can get out at any time they want!! Without money this cult would not survive just like the rest!

Whilst I have no time for Scientoloy, this does highlight James' attitude to things. He'll use anything or anyone while it benefits him but once its served its purpose he flicks it like a retired polo pony.

The tactics of the Church of Scientology are revealed by their own internal documents. Anonymous have played a big role in obtaining, revealing and publisizing those documents. You can get everything from scientology's secret bibles (the OT documents) to the orders signed by L Ron Hubbard setting up a penal organization for disobedient members of Sea Org (scientology's very own paramilitary). Check it all out on wiki leaks, or http://tinyurl.com/4g3ax7
