Australians are paying up to $4 more per kilo of home-grown beef in supermarkets than in Japan.
The Australian Beef Association has called on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to investigate meat mark-ups in its forthcoming inquiry into grocery prices.
The ABA claims a Tokyo supermarket was selling Australian mince for $A8-$A10 a kilogram after a 38 per cent tariff, while Australian supermarket priced domestic mince at up to $14 per kilogram.
“The more we study the mark ups in the Australian meat chain, the angrier we are getting,” ABA chairman Brad Bellinger said.
“We have calculated that the retail mark-up on beef mince exceeds 100 per cent."
"This contrasts with a supermarket submission to the ACCC Livestock Price Inquiry of 2006-2007, where they claimed a three per cent mark-up.”
