Children left to suffer in Burma cyclone aftermath: UNICEF

11/05/2008 12:19:00 PM.  | LIVENEWS.com.au & AAP

There are fears thousands of children in cyclone ravaged Burma are being left to suffer as the government maintains its restriction on outside aid.

Since Friday the Burmese military regime has impounded four United Nations aircraft containing food and medical supplies.

UNICEF’s Michael Boseerkew says the ban will hit children the hardest.

“Our focus is really on children,” he said.

“They make up about one-third of the population of Myanmar [Burma] and they’re the most severely affected in a crisis like this.”

Meanwhile, Australia is boosting its aid to the cyclone-ravaged country.

But Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner says first they have to make sure the aid can get through to those who desperately need it.

He's told the Ten Network the three million dollars promised last week is just a downpayment and it will be substantially increased shortly.

About 100,000 people are feared to have been killed by cyclone Nargis and at least 1.5 million people have been left homeless.

The latest is approximately 200,000 people. However, the tyrannical regime of Burma will proceed with their fixed 'election' before accepting aid. Few seem to appreciate the role China plays in this impasse. Why doesn't Rudd talk with his string pullers in China? I expect Mr Howard would have.
