Defence reveals details of fatal battle

12/05/2008 4:08:00 PM.  | Yoni Bashan
The details of a gruesome battle between Australian and Taliban forces last year, which saw one Australian soldier lose his life, has finally come to light.

Private Luke Worsley was killed when his commando unit stormed a Taliban village in Afghanistan.

Now Defence has released the chilling details of the high risk operation.

His team was raiding a building, believed to be a bomb-making compound.

The 26-year-old was the first to go inside; a heavy machinegun was pointing directly at him and he was killed by a single bullet to the head.

The new report also quashes allegations of abuse by Australian soldiers against their captives.

Officials say complaints are often made by the enemy in a bid to undermine the peace-keeping efforts of our troops.

Much good news doesn't seem to get reported from Iraq. The terrorist manual standard of complaints against Western soldiers seem to get plenty of airplay. Luke paid a very high price to serve.
