Return of the smirk: On-form Costello attacks Swan, reporters

Former Treasurer Peter Costello was up to his old tricks today, taking a swipe at "L-plater" Treasurer Wayne Swan and some of Australia's top journalists in his classic wry style.

Responsible for 12 budgets since 1996, Mr Costello dubbed Rudd's money-man the luckiest incoming Treasurer in history, using the rare media appearance as one last chance to boast the Howard Government's financial legacy.

Mr Costello also traded blows with Sky News' David Spears, The Australian's Samantha Maiden and veteran Age journalist, Michelle Gratten.

The confident performance has once again raised speculation that Mr Costello may make a tilt for the Coalition leadership position, but the former Treasurer says he was merely keeping a promise.

When Spears suggested Costello’s continuing coyness on the question of leadership was damaging the party the Treasurer returned fire.

“Is it? Well you say it is. Why don’t you interview yourselves?” he asked before launching into a mock interview of Spears questioning himself.

“After dealing with you people for 20 years I just don’t feel I have to be at your beck and call anymore.”

It must be tough for those journalists, not wanting to attack the government anymore and not able to find fault with the opposition. The previous opposition was more of a partner with those journalists. They must miss the cameraderie. Still, Peter is still spot on.

Costello's put down of David Spears and Michelle Grattan was simply brilliant! He may have been quiet for a while but Pete's certainly hasn't lost his touch. He would make a brilliant PM (one day, just wait.....with Turnbull as Treasurer....what a combination against the wimps that are running the country (into the ground) now!

I tell you, if the ship pwas sinking - I'd want Costello on my boat! By the time Rudd had formed a committee or two...his boat would have sunk!

Good on you Peter-sock it to them. I think some of those journalists, judging from Rudds extended media honeymoon, are card carrying Labor Part members.

This is why the smirk is on the backbench and Rudd is PM. Costello your days are numbered.

Yeah, Rudd is PM and the country has been sinking in high living costs since he won. Good job and way to go! Poor labor voters who voted the mob in only to give them more pain.

Hey Maybury, You are right...half of us didn't want Costello, the other half wanted your Ruddite mates. Let's see what happens tonight. In theory Swan can't get it wrong...he gets a minimum 1.5% of GDP by DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (which is what this mob have doen since they got elected!)

Mr Costello, the Australian public are sick of you. Remember they voted you out. Australia was awash with money due to the mining boom, yet Aussies including retired pensioners could not get dental care. What a low scumbag you are. Aussie kids could not get into universities, hospitals are almost third world, people are being killed on our pathetic highways. You are a bloody murderer. Thats why you were rejected. You should be charged with crimes against humanity, you lowlife scumbag.

Alex - I think you've got your States and your Federals mixed up? Or is it the way that everything that is wrong is coalition and everything that is right is Labor? I'd have Costello as Teasurer ANY DAY over the current mob of indecisive ideological losers. (And just to keep the balance...Australia is still awash with money....how lucky is Swan!)

Lol Geoff, I like you're optimistic dream team. Perhaps more apt would be Costello as PM and Tony Abbott as his deputy, Abbott and Costello with 'I don't know' Turnbull on third ! What's funny about Costellos 'witty' comments is that they clearly come from a broken man who just doesn't give a stuff about what Australia thinks anymore ! (if he ever did)

Anthony...hardly a "broken man" - reflecting on 4 years of 1.5%+ of GDP and an easy start for Swan. Were you watching the same video as the rest of us? Watch Swan trash the "Future Fund" tonight or more likely re-badge it as his own idea!

Anthony L .NSW Howard and Costello saved the Nation from the ravages of Hawke and Keating. All non biased Australians will gladly admit to that. Any way what have we now? Rudd on pole position (remember his escapade at the Scores strip club) Swan refusing to pull Rabbits out of the hat but managing to pull the inflation genie out of the bottle. School computer promises that are half baked, Public Hospitals that are going to deteriorate further thanks to Rudd’s Medicare surcharge policy etc.etc.

Brilliant. I miss Peter Costello, his intelligence, wit, pragmatic approach, if only he would take the Leadership role, what a brilliant leader he already is. I can only feel good about the fact that I supported Costello for his entire term whist he led Australia down a sound and brilliant economic path. I sleep well at night knowing I did not vote for Wayne Swan and Kevin Nasty Rudd to ruin it all. Increased prices, taxes, union strikes, wage blowouts...in 6 months it's already happening.

When Whitlam got into power he took over running the country with one offsider (Lance Barnard), when Rudd got into power he had to call on the help of 1000 supporters for ideas.

And you would have noticed, in keeping with the Rudd symbolism, that an actress (or sorry actor) received the biggest publicity for his 2020 stunt. The rest of them were probably Rudd like Dudds.

If Australia is "lucky" Costello will one day lead the Country. As a supporter of "liberal" values (not necessarily the Liberal Party), we should avoid ideological lurches to the left (which we saw in the budget). But the plan is for 2010 and the Liberal party in opposition has probably 18 months left to get its team firing. Some loss of direction inevitably follws a defeat, but I believe we need to see some firm direction emerging from the Liberal camp. A "challenge" to the budget is a start.
