Australian talk show golden boy Rove McManus has missed his shot at hosting stable US talk show NBC Late Night.
McManus was on the shortlist to replace current host Conan O'Brien, who will be replacing Jay Leno on The Tonight Show - Leaving the slot on Late Night open.
Rove had been placed on the shortlist after wowing the veteran Leno on his popular Tonight show.
Joining Rove on the list was "Good Luck Chuck" star Dane Cook, and fan favorite cynic Jon Stewart, who successfully hosted the Academy Awards this year - a tough feat for even the most seasoned performers.
But the gig ultimately went to Hollywood actor Jimmy Fallon, who forged his popularity on the long running comedy show Saturday Night Live.
There has been no confirmation when the changeover would take place - with the network still negotiating to keep Leno.
"We love Jay and want to keep him around," NBC Entertainment co-chairman Ben Silverman said today.
Rove has been apprehensive to discuss his attempt to break into the American market after he signed with an American agent last year.
