Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson's hold on the top job will be closely scrutinised tonight when he delivers his reply to the budget.

With response to Labor's first budget in 13 years being generally positive -- all eyes will be on Brendan Nelson tonight when he gets to his feet and makes his formal reply

The opposition has already labelled the budget as high taxing high spending.

A theme Dr Nelson will again push.

“I certainly won’t be putting more pressure on Australian families, in fact I’ll be proposing considerably less,” he told reporters today.

The Government says his challenge is to clarify his position on the spending cuts in place, including means testing the baby bonus.

Assistant Treasurer Chris Bowen says so far, they're making little sense on very sensitive issues.

“His leadership is in trouble, but he shouldn’t use that as an excuse,” Mr Bowen said.

“He should provide sensible, alternative plans. We need to know where they stand as the alternative government of the nation.”

Some of Dr Nelson's colleagues have set the budget as the time to reassess where the party is heading.

The Opposition and the minor parties are also looking at the levy on alcopops, which could mean it being blocked in the senate.

The Opposition has labelled it a blatant tax grab.

"The Nightwatchman's" innings is nigh. He won't be submitting to scrutiny by offering an alternate budget. Install Turnbull now and give Brendon thanks and goodbye.

Why offer an alternative budget anyway. Rudd has all the answers-he told us that before the election. He has further enhanced his knowledge with the 2020 summit-something he didn't mention before the election-he said that he was the only one with the vision to provide new leadership. With all this vision he doesn't need a Brendan Nelson budget. He has enough coalition excellence to copy from the Howard era.

Brendan Nelson must concentrate on the economic aspects of the Budget. He must let ordinary Australians know that Swan is the first Treasurer in history to inherit a Government debt free economy and that the record surplus has had very little to do with Labor and more to do with the sound economic management of the Coalition. The budget is an ideological 'pay back' one and will do nothing to give relief to 'working families' that are struggling to day. And there is too much money going to the incompetent, wasteful State Governments for political purposes.

I like th eterm "binge taxing" to describe the way Rudd has been caught out on this one. Yesterday he was interviewed and he tried to explain away the increases in treasury revenue forecasts (showing consumption to INCREASE by 10% per year!). He lied. Quite simply he lied (in the same manner as the "strip club" lies...he "wasn't across the detail of everything in the budget!). Nelson needs to expose ALL the dirty dealings in this budget grab for tax increases. Good luck Dr. Nelson.

Dr. Nelson will need more than good luck. We have a popular Office Sweep to nominate his departure date.

Neil Mason-if Dr Nelson were to go he would go without having harmed anyone. When Rudd goes there will be a lot of broken people especially among the 'working families' that he has lied to.

Neil Mason, sounds like you are part of a hard working family! I hope you are not on the "average wage" because you would be "nearly rich" by Rudd's estimation, then you'd have to vote for the Liberals! Unless you are a senior, and then you'd also have to vote for the Liberals!

Good luck Dr. Nelson, go for the juggler vein, and make it simple for all the dopes who find it hard to understand

Fair enough but I did spell check it.

Hey Bart, juggler's a word but it's got nothing to do with one's jugular vein. Maybe you should reconsider calling everyone with views left of Genghis Kahn an idiot when you can't work this one out for yourself.

Thanks Poetic Justice, I picked it up after I posted. How wonderfully exited you lefties must be when you pick up on something completely insignificant and milk it for all its worth. (Typical Labor lovers)Keep going with it, it just shows what little point and meaning/contribution you all have. Bring it on. Please.

Macauley, for your edification, I have noted on previous occasions, spelling errors happening between submission and publishing of comments. Live News appear to have an occasional "cut & paste" problem.

Thanks Bolton. I suspect then, that you're thrilled that "edification" got through.

I think Dr Nelson will do a good job. However, I don't think that will stop the usual suspects from declaring it a poor performance. Dr Nelson announced he would be judging this budget based on the criteria Rudd announced after the budget last year. That will work well for Dr Nelson because Rudd has failed each of his own performance markers. But some haven't noticed that yet.

Perhaps tonight will mark the inevitable - when they'll stop pfaffing around and put Turnbull in the Chair. Goodnight Nightwatchman !

Amongst Rudd/Swan's "gllom and doom" and what they "inherited, remember the Swiss-based Institute for Management Development has Australia ranked 7th in 55 economies in its annual competitiveness survey. Doesn'tr this undermine Labor's mantra regarding "the problems they inherited"?

Doctor Nelson once had one foot in Labor and it would serve him better to have two there today when one hear the revolting noice his mates present on the Budget08. It sounds like a crowd of seagulls on the beach fighting over a suggy breadloaf. The whole of the Parliament should be replaced with cultivated anti-anglo senators. How much are this "seagulls" payed per hour for this meaningless noice???? Any one knows?

"How much are this "seagulls" payed per hour for this meaningless noise?"..THEY COST @ TENS OF MILLION $ EACH/YEAR, THESE JOKERS need 25k/30k pay rise (15% hike) every time on top of FEW millions $ SUPER, when they piss off from Politics. But when it comes to increasing wages/pension,they don't even give 3% rise which is only $7.50 per wk for an old pensioner($253 per wk), or to $15-$20 per wk to a low income wage earner($600/wk). The LIBERAL Politicians are REAL SUCKERS OF HARD WORKING Society.

Sjolander...I think you'll find that both sides made the same "noise". One group on Tuesday, the other on Thursday. Both sides also did the obligatory "standing ovation". HOWEVER, I did note that the gallery was more vocally supporting Nelson than Rudd 2 days earlier. Perhaps Dr. Nelson made more sense to "working families" AS WELL AS "NON WORKING FAMIILIES" and "SINGLE INCOME FAMILIES" and "SENIORS FAMILIES" and "SELF FUNDED RETIREE FAMILIES"

Sir Bolton you may be right. Was dr Nelson's speech written by himself or by Costello?
