New death threat against high commission in Fiji

15/05/2008 1:31:00 PM.  |
Australia is reviewing security at its high commission in Fiji after receiving another death threat through the mail.

Access to Australia's mission in Suva was being restricted following today's threat, the second in eight days, the high commission said in a statement.

"The high commission immediately contacted the police, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Civil Aviation," the statement said.

"The high commission is reviewing current security arrangements and will be restricting access to the high commission forthwith.

"During the course of the day the high commission will be seeking urgent high level discussions with the Fiji authorities on the two threats received in the past week," it said.

Last week two copies of a death threat against Australia's high commissioner in Fiji, James Batley, were left in an envelope at the high commission after being delivered by a man who had pulled up in a taxi.

At the time the Australian government said the threat appeared to be politically motivated, and made by a person or group unhappy with Australia's policy on Fiji.

"Needless to say, neither the high commission nor the Australian government will be intimidated by threats," it said at the time.

Fiji police boosted security at the high commission after last week's death threat.

Australia introduced sanctions against Fiji following the military coup in December 2006, when the democratically elected government was ousted.

The Australian Government has lost its moral fibre. It can no longer hold criminals to account.
