The federal government will be targeting Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson's economic credentials after he formally set the opposition on the path to blocking some of the Government's tax changes when they reach the senate.

Dr Nelson's is to go through with his threat and block the government's alcopops tax which he says is nothing more than a tax binge.

In his budget reply speech which was keenly watched as an indication of his future as leader he claimed that the government's budget was used as a sledgehammer against people Labor doesn't like.

Assistant Treasurer Chris Bowen says Dr Nelson is economically irresponsible.

“They threw around money like confetti at a wedding.”

The minor parties in the senate were critical that Dr Nelson offered little in the areas such as climate change, skills shortages and childcare.

Mr Rudd told us he would reduce the price of petrol for working families and Dr Nelson has shown him how to do it. Well done.

You really think 5 cents a litre will help? This will only add to Woolworths/Coles bottom line.

Maybury...we hear the left squirming. Nothing of substance in your entry....just likes Rudd's rhetoric. Rudd needs goons like you to keep in office. Keep trying, but the fight is on.

Brendan Nelson last night showed he is ready to server the people of Australia. He addressed the issues that are affecting real Australian while at the same time showed to be a good economic manager. We now have someone out there looking after our interests and not that of those how funded Labors win at the last election. WELL DONE BRENDON

Brendan Nelson is showing a lot of courage given his low poll ratings. His performance in his budget reply speech was excellent. Prior to that, in question time and later in a suspension of standing orders motion, Kevin Rudd and Wayne Swan performed dismally in spite of the assistance they got from the speaker. Rudd didn't seem to understand the question when asked about the progressive increase in alcopop tax. He kept reading from a report, which he refused to table, but did not say why the tax should increase if it was meant to reduce consumption. In the suspension of standing orders debate Swan kept defying the speaker and did not directly address the points that had been raised by Malcolm Turnbull-all he kept doing was referring to the oppositions leadership-pathetic.

Dr Nelson was spot on. The usual suspects denigrated him, but his message was spot on. I notice that even long time Liberal critic Bolt had to moderate his attack based on Dr Nelson's reasonable and measured approach. Fairfax haven't pretended to be fair for a long time. Unlike Rudd, I think Dr Nelson has listened, and continues to.

An admirable response indeed from Dr Nelson. But how much will it further delay his inevitable replacement ?

ivo K, 5 cents a litre is better than we were offered by Rudd. I welcome his ideas. I am also glad to see he was in control and decisive in his budget speech. I also fully support his blocking of the alcopop tax in the senate. It really was only a tax grab as i have seen the evidence myself with all the teenagers i know. It didnt slow them down one bit.

you libs are a joke.... JH did sweet FA for working-class during his 11 years... was never interested in Global Warming or the drought effect it was having (till the polls started looking BAD)... never considered lowering the tax-excise (which by the way WO was raised as an issue over 4 YEARS ago) until it became a point-scorer in opposition... and pumped up the private health funds as a way of discharging your responsibilities to the health system (it's a STATE problem now).... go suck eggs

Happy Unionist - Don't think you are going to be too happy for long. Rudd and Swan or, more appropriately, dumb and dumber, are going to ruin our economy in double quick time. Since these amateurs have taken over business and consumer confidence has slumped and inflation is running at a 16 year high-(The Howard Government averaged less than 3%). If you are a Union man you are a traitor to their cause because John Howard gave us an unemployment rate of 4.2% and already Rudd’s own budget is planning to put 134000 people out of work. That’s just for starters because if he hangs around long enough to implement his carbon emissions nonsense there will be a lot more ‘happy unionists’ on the scrap heap.
