Outrage over Melbourne gangland murder site radio stunt

17/05/2008 7:45:00 AM.  | Rhys Sain
Victims of crime groups have been outraged by a Melbourne radio station’s stunt featuring Roberta Williams and a tour of gangland murder sites.

The groups reportedly said the Nova 100 promotion glorifies and glamorizes criminals.

"They are trying to glorify these hoons who are in jail for killing each other. Why are they glorifying these mongrels?" said Crime Victims Support Association spokesman Noel McNamara.

"Nova should get a big kick up the ginger for promoting this.''

Nova’s Hughesy and Kate show took underworld wife and convicted drug trafficker Roberta Williams, along with radio competition winners to locations of killing in a stretch hummer.

Nova Station general manager Sam Thompson defended using Ms Williams for the promotion claiming it was merely playing up to fans’ interest in the gangland scene.

“[Roberta Williams] listens to the show and is a fan.”

“We found that people were interested in her and we are responding to that interest,” she said.

“What we’re doing is acknowledging is genuine interest in the gangland scene.”

“People are just interested in what’s happened,” she said.

Interest in the gangland war has been heightened recently by court cases and the Channel 9's controversial series Underbelly, even though it’s yet to be aired in Victoria.

I wish they would get interested in reporting government corruption too. Not just reporting on the navel gazing antics of serial killers.
