A man is recovering in hospital after being hit over the head in a road rage incident in Sydney's south-west overnight.

The 48-year-old man was driving through Carnes Hill at around 6pm on Friday night when he was overtaken by a white Toyota Hilux.

Two men climbed out of the vehicle on Camden Valley Way and approached the other driver.

One of the pair allegedly struck the victim on the head and left arm with a metal pole before driving off.

The 48-year-old is due to undergo surgery for a broken arm at Liverpool hospital.

Officers are pleading for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
